Asian giant accuses Apple of helping citizens sneak porn in through the backdoor
Apple, Inc. (
) is still
recovering from a PR disaster
regarding poor warranty support in China, whose state-run media pounded the American firm hard with scathing articles. Now it appears that the Chinese media is yet again whipping the top American firm, this time over
by the newspaper
The People's Daily
that accuse Apple of being among the app store proprietors to be peddling smut to the masses.
Officially, Apple's App Store terms
. Late Apple CEO and cofounder Steven P. Jobs even accused his company's chief rival Google Inc.'s (
) Android platform
of being a "porn phone"
Much like China
, Mr. Jobs promised to
offer customers "freedom from porn."
However, recently there have been a rash of so-called "softcore" apps, which shown provocative images of scantily clad women. Other available iOS apps provide image manipulation tools to make female anatomy (obtained from internet images not distributed with the app) animate in a bouncing motion.
While pornography is not explicitly illegal in China, the tightly regulated internet superpower has
actively resisted internet pornography
from being openly available
on its networks. As a result pornography has not penetrated China's internet as deeply as the American market, although the Chinese often manage to
sneak their porn in the backdoor
using proxies or other techniques.

Unlike the warranties coverage, the indictment on Apple is not a top story, and Apple is only one of several companies to be accused of provoking the problem. Still the accusation is enough to
, as a similar 2009 accusation of Google Inc. (
) was followed by a vicious series of hacking attacks on that U.S tech giant.
Citigroup Inc. (
) analyst Glen Yeung
that the previous Chinese warranty scandal could make it hard going for Apple. He estimates that scandal will cost Apple around $13B USD in sales due to ill-will in the world's largest mobile market. When it came to the warranties issue, Apple CEO Tim Cook was certainly eager to come to the table with an apology, looking to get China off his company's case. So far Apple has yet to acknowledge the latest accusation from China.

It also decided the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD war. For a long time, Sony was refusing to allow porn to be published on Blu-Ray...to which the porn industry said "fine, we'll do HD-DVD."
It became clear though that if they forced porn to exist only on HD-DVD, then they stood a very good chance of losing that format war. People who want to see porn - which is to say, essentially every living human on the planet - would buy HD-DVD players.
So eventually Sony relented, and when the porn guys said "ok, we'll do Blu-Ray" the final nail was put in the HD-DVD coffin.

Once again you make shit up to make it appear to others that you have some authority on a given subject. You really are a fucking putz...
Blu-Ray won for two reasons and two reasons only. Neither had anything to do with pornography. Pornography had already largely shifted to the internet as a business model.
Firstly the inclusion of the BD drive in the PS3 was a major factor. Essentially it meant people who bought a PS3 and were going to buy one anyway more or less got a BD drive for free. People who just wanted a BD player perceived that they were also getting something for nothing by putting their feet in the Sony camp. It is also a big factor in the inexorable catch-up of PS3 sales to the 360 which had a year's head start.
Secondly, and this is the other reason why you cannot draw comparisons to Betamax / VHS is DRM and how the film studios gained or lost confidence in the formats as time went on. Yes they rallied to one format or the other but it was all sales patter by Toshiba and Sony until it became clear that the lower manufacturing costs of HD-DVD discs was not really that big a deal to the advantages that BD gave them and ultimately over time even the manufacturing cost pretty much converged leaving the last reason not to adopt BD a moot point.

You're such a tool.
You might want to spend 3 seconds on Google before launching into something like that. The porn thing played out as I represented it. A bajillion hits on Google will back that up.
BD on PS3? Duh. It's Sony.
Manufacturing costs had nothing to do with it. Porn was the last thing propping HD-DVD up, and when they left, it died.

Oh the irony....
