Incredibly fast service costs only $51 per month
Sony has announced the world's fastest home internet service. If you're in the United States, don't get excited. This internet service is exclusively available in Japan and offers download speeds of 2 Gbps (uploads are capped at 1 Gbps). The internet service is provided by So-net Entertainment and is called Nuro.
The fiber-optic service was available for qualifying homes as of today including houses, apartments, and small businesses in Tokyo and six surrounding communities.
Incredibly, So-net Entertainment is offering the service for ¥4980, which works out to only $51 per month. There is a rather large installation fee of ¥52,500 ($543), however, those who apply for the service online right now can waive that installation fee.
The web connectivity price includes the rental of an Optical Network Unit (ONU) designed handle the high-speed connectivity and converts signals from the fiber to broadband internet usable in the home. Considering that 2 Gbps is faster than most home routers and adapters support, odds are the hardware within the user's house will be the limiting factor on speeds.
The Japanese government continues to back fiber-optic connections to private residences in Japan. Roughly 25% of all homes in Japan are currently connected to fiber internet services giving Japan the second highest rate of connectivity to fiber in the world. The most connected fiber country in the world is the UAE with over 70%.
For comparisons sake,
Google Fiber costs $70/month
and offers 1 Gbps speeds (up/down).

RE: How much bandwidth do you need?

EASY.. 4K TV.. People said this wayyyyyy back in the day of 420 MB Hard drives.. When WD released its awesome 1.6GB Hard drive, it was like a game changer BACK in 1996.. Same with CD Roms, DVD Roms.. MEMMORY.. LOL WAYYY BACK in 1996 I had 16 MB Ram, RIDICULOUS for its day. We all said, "How much ram do you need?" 14.4 Modems, RULLED THE WORLD, then came 28.8, then 33.6, Then the Almighty 56k.. (Naturally all PRE Broadband internet.. People always said, "How Much bandwidth do you need?"..
Welcome to the infamous world of.. PROGRESS!!!!
As it sits now, just to stream 1080P.. 50MB from comcast actually Rocks.. BUT !!! Considering that this is JAPAN we are talking about. JAPAN, does not have the RED Tape that clogs USA, when it comes to rolling out Awesome products. SONY, THIS month, is due to release its LOW end 4K, TV.. 4x the Resolution of 1080P, And Mind you.. When Streaming a blu-ray, over a LAN, IT Saturates a 10/100 Network. As 10/100 only delivers 12.5MB per second. Gigabit does 125MB per second, give / take..
2GB internet, will give us 250MB per second.. Which is cool and all.
AND LAST but not least.. Sony's 4K TV, ---- WELL 8K is RIGHT BEHIND IT.. Remember folks.. When Flat Panel PLASMA's FIRST Hit the scene, they werent even 720P.. NOW you can get 70" 1080P, at Walmart. Meaning, LATEST and GREATEST, need MEGA amount of Bandwidth..
P.S. 50Mbps Comcast in the Ann Arbor MI, area is $53.00 a Month, WITH!!! Digital Cable.. Only way that companies can charge a premium on Data, is only when they can truely OFFER INSANE Internet to the Rich GUYS, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM..
PSS.. You can go to Kansas, and now Austin (I believe), and get 1Gbps Internet from google Fiber, for under $100 a month.. (Not fully sure,, BUT i am tempted to re-locate.), lol
And to cap this off.. In 2006.. A 17Mb internet VIA Fractional t3.. Ran in the Neighborhood of $15,000 a MONTH.. So with progress, it just gets cheaper and faster.. Like a Commodity.. Hence Walmart selling Smartphones for $40.00 a Month. 3 Years ago, it was $150.00 a month, on 3G.. In Europe, they are rolling out 5G..

Unfortunately this type of progress will never happen in the United States. Japan and Europe had the "opportunity" to re-establish the way their utilities work after World War 2, requiring heavy rebuilding and expansion, contracting out to as many private companies to build what was necessary and regulating in a sane manner, and "fortunately" we haven't had a disaster like that, but without a functional political system, that's the only other way we can completely deregulate our wireless spectrum and utilities.
At least we can finally buy natural gas and electricity from competing companies...we haven't been able to do that since the Nixon Administration.
