Ericsson and Microsoft officially confirmed the deal

Word surfaced in late March that Ericsson was in discussions to buy Microsoft's IPTV arm. Today Microsoft and Ericsson have officially confirmed that the deal has been closed. Microsoft and Ericsson have entered into a definitive agreement that will have Ericsson acquiring Microsoft's Mediaroom technology.

Microsoft says that Mediaroom is the number one IP TV platform deployed by TV operators around the world. The two companies say that the acquisition is mutually beneficial and strategically aligned for both companies. Ericsson promises to continue its investment in the growth and success of the software.

Microsoft says that the deal allows it to commit 100% of its focus on consumer TV to the Xbox platform. Microsoft says with all of its resources now aimed at the Xbox, it will continue to make the game console the premium entertainment service delivering games and entertainment consumers want. There is no indication of exactly when this deal will close at this time.
