Samsung phablets will be called Mega

Rumors have been going around that Samsung is getting ready to launch a couple of new devices that would fall into the “phablet” category.

Reports are now indicating that Samsung has changed the name of those devices, calling them the Galaxy Mega line. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is code-named GT-I9152. So far, rumors indicate that this device will be an Android gadget with a screen measuring – wait for it -- 5.8-inches.

5.8-inches is certainly a big screen for a smartphone, but the other device Samsung reportedly has up its sleeve is even larger. The second device is called the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and carries the codename GT-I9200. This particular device was previously been rumored to be called the Galaxy Note III.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is expected to be offered in white somewhere around the end of May. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 will reportedly come in black and white colors around the middle of June.

Same here.

A smartphone needs to fit in my pocket. This one won't.

@Samsung... If I wanted a tablet, I would buy a tablet. Not a smartphone.

The Note form-factor is great for ladies because many of them carry a phone in their purse (opposed to their pocket)

You're not the target market, Samsung is happy to sell you a smaller phone. My brother's girlfriend would probably love this, she keeps her Galaxy Note in her purse.

I won't be. And there will also be even more millions of others who won't see a point to it either.

I don't say that there won't be a market for it -- there will be plenty of folks that are looking for an almost-7-inch phablet. But you could get a 4G/LTE on a 7" tablet for quite a while now and those sell just fine.

BUT they (samsung and Asus) don't call them smartphones. They call them tablets. Think about it a sec. There really isn't a big difference in 6.3" and 7". You have to stuff either one into a bag to cart it around. Why does Samsung not simply put out an upgraded version their already popular 7" Galaxy 2 LTE tablet and call it a day? Why put out a confusing product with a .7" smaller screen that isn't really what anyone sane would call a smartphone?

"I won't be. And there will also be even more millions of others who won't see a point to it either."

There are hundreds of phones and tablets on the market. Most people will buy 1 to 3 total including phones and tablets and leave 100's of other models unpurchased. More choice = better. If you dont like it, find one you like.

Choices... Options. Its all good. How is it confusing ? And why should your dislike for a 5.8 and a 6.3 inch model limit my choices? Buy what you want and let the market decide what they want.

lol, bro, who is limiting your choices? Samsung will do what Samsung wants (at least until N. Korea starts nuking them). They certainly don't give a crap what I say.

You said it yourself. Choices. *I* won't be buying one. Neither will the millions of others that feel the same way as I do. As reclaimer is saying --- so what?

That is not saying they won't sell or be popular with people that feel there is a need for these. If those people find this useful, the will lay down the cash to buy one. I won't. If I need to make a voice call on a tablet, there is skype and WiFi/LTE. For all those other times there is my SGS3.

No worries. You just came off like you were saying they shouldn't make these because most people wont want them. I know they will do what they want, we are just losers on the web speaking hypothetically about unconfirmed products. LOL

I dont know if these are in addition to the Note line, or are the Note line (just pre-release code names) or are replacing the Note line. It could be in addition, the difference being a large screen phone without active stylus. Either way its going to be a good year for Smartphones in general.

Why? Opportunity cost, that's why. The time, money, and energy spent on a bad idea which could've been used on a good idea or to improve an existing product. Choice and market and all that aren't always what they're cracked up to be. Sometimes (read: all the time) you've gotta go on principles.

Sorry to tell you, but people ARE wanting larger and larger phones, so that makes this a good idea. Even Apple, who once said 3.5 inches is the largest a phone needs to be, went to 4 inches and many MANY people wont buy it because its way too small. Meanwhile more and more manufacturers are making phablets because that is what people want. Of course not everyone, but the market is there and it will sell.

If I were in change of a smartphone division, I would absolutely be making phones in the 3-4 , 4--5, 5-6 inch ranges, and options in each. People are different, they have different wants and needs and requirements. Some want a large screen phone. I know a Note2 fits perfectly in my pocket without being an issue. A larger phone would be fine as well.

I guess we'll see about all that. There is an upper limit; the question is just where it lies.

I will admit that when I first started thinking about this way back in the day, 6.3'' is actually right at the mark I chose. I think I still have the photo somewhere that I took in 2003 of a 6.5'' cardboard box in my jeans pocket to support my argument to a friend that it was the best ultramobile screen size. The difference is I wasn't thinking about phone functionality at all back then. That does make a difference.

Now that I think about it, I'll probably end up buying one lol. I don't use my phone as a phone.

"Now that I think about it, I'll probably end up buying one lol. I don't use my phone as a phone."

Exactly... When I do, its usually in my car on Bluetooth or at my Computer on speakerphone so I can type. The only time its in my hand at my face is if I receive a call and I actually answer it (which is rare).

And the Notes you can still stuff in a (big) pocket. Can't you? Just wear cargo pants rather than tight jeans.

I'm not saying that they won't sell. Of course they will. Some people will buy anything. There was once a woman who made a huge bankroll selling jewelery made out of bird shit.

I just can't see the place for them with Notes on one side and Samsung's own LTE Galaxy Tabs on the other.

A 7" tablet that you can place calls on? Or is that just for data?

That is the issue that you don't get, IT ALSO FUNCTIONS AS A PHONE! It is not just a tablet.

I know half a dozen of my parents older friends who have a Note simply because it is big and therefore easy for them to read and dial on... That's right, old people that I know love these things, tablets not so much.

Just an FYI...

My eyes suck as I am often legally blind.
My fingers are arthritic.
I'm old enough to be classified as one of your parents older friends.

I have a GSG3 (and eventually an SGS4) and can dial it just fine. If I can't, well there is something called voice recognition.

Yes a smaller tablet that can make calls is dandy as long as you don't go trying to hold it up to the side of your head.

And yes, you can make voice and video calls on even a WiFi-only tablet. LTE just gives better performance. Hell, I've even made voice calls on an Apple iPod Touch. It is not so hard.

The days of needing POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) are going away and being replaced by data-based VoIP services.

I am glad you are so progressive, but many are not and the Note has been just what they wanted. POTS is still a major part of how they communicate.

By the way, wouldn't Plain Old Telephone Service be classified as a landline? Also why would you want to make a call on an Ipod Touch? In my opinion, there are much easier devices to place calls on.

Anyone sane?.....you sound more like a hater. Let's not 4get that those tablets also have that crappy tablet OS on them too. Now that the Note 2 is doing so well why not go with bigger phone tablets with actual android ICS or Key Lime? Let's not 4get what is actually happening here. The goal is to flood the market with choices to knock Apple out of it. This has always kept Apple in their place.
