The idea behind the BRAIN Initiative is to gain a deeper understanding of the complex connections in the brain and their relationship with how the rest of the body behaves

The Obama administration announced the BRAIN Initiative today, which is a $100 million research project to accelerate our understanding of the human brain.

The BRAIN Initiative, which stands for Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies, will be considered one of the administration's "Grand Challenges" of the 21st century.

The idea behind the BRAIN Initiative is to gain a deeper understanding of the complex connections in the brain and their relationship with how the rest of the body behaves. With this knowledge, medical conditions like Alzheimer's, autism, epilepsy and schizophrenia could eventually be understood and treated more effectively -- with the hopes of one day being cured.

In addition, this initiative could lead to job creation and economic growth through new innovations and opportunities.

The BRAIN Initiative is launching with about $100 million in funding in the Fiscal Year 2014 budget. The research is supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Private funding will come into play as well. For example, the Allen Institute for Brain Science will pay at least $60 million annually for BRAIN Initiative projects.

Many brain-related advances have come through recently, such as that from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The team used high-speed light sheet microscopy to achieve whole brain imaging of the brain of a fish larva. They were able to image the activity of 80 percent of the neurons in the brain at speeds of a whole brain every 1.3 seconds.

Last year,
MIT and Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have created a new automated method that pinpoints certain characteristics of neurons in the brain.

Some of those uncompromising douchebags actually managed to set out a budget. Points to whomever can guess which ones!

First, the constitution clearly states that any revenue generating bill must originate from the House. Not only this but historical precedent shows that spending bills must also originate from the House or the House will simply ignore the bill. These facts obviously haven't deterred Republicans, and people such as yourself, from lambasting the Senate for not passing a budget it is constitutionally not supposed to pass.

Second, the Senate passed a budget anyway, so what in the world is your point? They weren't supposed to pass a budget, weren't required to pass a budget, but still passed one anyway to shut people like you up. What happened? Nothing, which is what was supposed to happen when the Senate does something like that.

Finally, you seem to think Republicans in the House are compromising because they "get more stuff done." They have a stronger majority than Democrats do in the Senate. They get stuff done because they can ram it down the throats of dissenting Democrats because they have the votes to do that. This isn't compromise. Paul Ryan's budget is anything BUT compromise. Democrats in the Senate aren't any better but then again I'm not sitting here pretending they are.

Yea the Dem controlled Senate passed a budget finally after over 3 damn years. The repub controlled House has passed many budgets in the same time frame. You are right that Obama isn't in control of those things yet he never blasted the Senate for not passing one. Also I love how when Bush was President taking time off was a huge deal and yet now when Obama does it now it's not so important.

No one complained when Bush spent 3 months of every year on vacation. He took more vacation time than any President since the 1930s and no one complained. Why? Because it's a fucking stupid thing to complain about.

Now, Obama is taking literally 1/4th of the amount of vacation time as Bush and blowhard such as Boehner and yourself get your panties in a wad about it. You guys are so fucking petty it's beyond pathetic.

Who listens to a group of people that believe they have a right to this land and "immigrants" don't. That homosexuals make a choice to be gay, and that "god" helps them in their decision making. Are we really surprised that people with these outlooks can't pass a budget or live in reality?
