No word on price at this time
NEC's struggling mobile phone unit hasn't produce many wildly popular smartphones and reports now indicate that the Japanese company is in talks to sell the unit to Lenovo. Lenovo, however, might have some competition in the bidding process, as there are reportedly ongoing talks with two Japanese buyers to acquire NEC’s mobile phone unit, which has posted losses for two consecutive years.
"Amid the rapidly changing market we are considering a number of ways to bolster the competitiveness of our mobile phone business, but nothing has been decided," NEC said in a statement through the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday in response to the media reports.
Lenovo has offered no official comments on the report.
reports that in October of 2012 NEC slashed it's mobile phone sales targets to 4.3 million units for the year ending in March of 2013. NEC had previously estimated sales of 5 million units during that timeframe.
