Official public debut will be April 20 in China

Odds are you're not familiar with the auto manufacturer called Detroit Electric. The company has been off the market for over 70 years, but it is set to make a comeback during 2013 with the promise of a new, all-electric sports car.

The company will produce the car in America and plans to create 180 local jobs by the end of 2013. The company is headquartered in Detroit at the Fisher Building and the vehicle will be produced in Michigan. The company is withholding details for the electric sports car this time only saying that it will be a limited edition two-seat 100% electric car, and it will launch next month.

Detroit Electric also promises a diverse family of high-performance electric vehicles will follow. The manufacturing facility in Michigan will start production in August with an annual capacity of 2,500 sports cars. The company promises that the vehicle will have outstanding performance, bold styling, and exhilarating handling characteristics.

The company makes no promises of driving range only saying that the vehicle will have "impressive range." The vehicle will be launched early next month in Detroit with the official global public unveil at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 20.

"We are proud to become the fourth car manufacturer born out of Detroit, and the first to manufacture a pure electric sports car from Michigan," said Mr Graunstadt. "We are committed to doing our part for this great revival of Detroit through innovation, entrepreneurship and determination – what we like to call 'Detroit 2.0'. Our investors and management team are thankful to the State of Michigan for the help provided in allowing Detroit Electric to carry on the legacy that began in Michigan so many years ago."

52k is only for the very limited range vehicle, it goes up to 80+k for the one with a usable range for most people.

While the Tesla S is an awesome car, it is not in the affordable catagory at this point. Hopefully many more people that find this affordable buy it to help get the costs down for us poor people that cannot afford that much for a car.

A lot of people thought the Humvee was 'affordable' and it sold. Don't pre-judge markets...remember you create markets, you don't cater to existing ones if you want to be successful.
