New T431s is the thinnest T Series notebook ever

Lenovo has pulled the wraps off its latest ultrabook computer promising a design that is thinner and lighter than its previous ultrabook offerings. The computer has a new innovative trackpad and an enhanced keyboard with refined aesthetics.

The enhanced trackpad is an evolution of the TrackPoint and TouchPad and features a larger, smooth, responsive multi-touch glass surface. The surface is optimized for Windows 8 gestures, click functionality, and has an integrated TrackPoint behavior. The new ThinkPad is the thinnest and lightest T series computer Lenovo has ever made.

 
“We obsess over the pursuit of perfection – as evidenced by more than 20 years of Lenovo ThinkPad design and engineering accolades. However, perfection cannot be achieved without a key ingredient: customer insight,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president and general manager, ThinkPad Business Unit. “The ThinkPad T431s is the first device featuring Lenovo’s new design, which represents a comprehensive examination of user experience and input.”

The T431s weighs 3.6 pounds and is 0.82-inches thick. To reach that weight, Lenovo use a carbon fiber top cover and a chassis. The machine uses a third-generation Intel Core processor with Turbo Boost. Graphics are handled by Intel HD graphics (which powers a 1600x900 display) and the computer can be fitted up to 12 GB of RAM.


Other features include a pair of USB 3.0 ports, an integrated fingerprint reader, hardware password manager, and self-encrypting drives (SSDs or traditional HDDS are available). The machine also features an always-on USB port to charge other devices such as smartphones.

The T431s ultrabook will be available starting in April with pricing starting off at $949.

Add in a 1920x1080 IPS screen and I'd buy it right now. Too bad.

As Lenovo offers more configuration options that everyone else (AFAIK) when you order on their web site, they could at least offer the IPS option for a fair price. What would you pay?

Ya, I just dont get it. Years ago, on modt models, you could get a 1024x768 screen , or for $50 more, a 1280x1024 or for $100 more a 1400x1050. Then with teh 16x10 models you get a default 1280x800 screen , or for $50 more, a 1680x1050 or for $100 more a 1920x1200. Today, now on the 16x9 (which sucks enough as it is) most models have one screen. Or dome models that do have options have crappy options. FFS, give people that want a better screen the option to have it.

Seriously. Even if it was 1600x900, I would buy as long as they don't pack those dismal 75:1 CR TN panels.

Seems like everyone realizes the importance of contrast ratio BUT Lenovo. They just keep selling brightness (NITS NITS NITS!); that train left 5 years ago.

The problem Lenovo (and everyone else) has is that there don't seem to be any decent 14" IPS 1080p screens. No one seems to make them. They can't source parts that no one makes.

If there arent, they need to do what Apple does. Pay some LCD maker to make it.

The problem isnt just teh 14 inch, its Lenovo's viewpoint toward LCD in the first place. They just dont put priority on it. Same as Dell, built in LCD's are always crappy in all of their laptops and AIO's. The difference with Lenovo is their quality is great. Lowest failure rates in the business and other than the screens thier products are simply awesome.


Loss of actual buttons

I'm disliking how new tech is losing actual buttons for a touch screen. This makes us have no feedback through touch, and makes us rely on visual feedback.
The loss of the buttons above the touch pad is not a good thing.

... What buttons? Are you talking about the "mouse" buttons? Those have been getting left out of trackpad designs for a long time now.

Not on Lenovo laptops - The T430s still had buttons for both the trackpad and the trackpoint.

I wouldn't mind a bigger touchpad, but I do like having the physical buttons separate. The touchpad on the T430U is nice and large, but they integrated the buttons into the touchpad and I found it very annoying.

Only reason i'm still with the Thinkpad is the fantastic keyboard.
Losing the great keyboard to a chiclet-style keyboard is almost surely a deal breaker for me. Will have to try it out.
