Schiller says Android OS updates are too slow

Apple must really feel the competition heating up, because Phil Schiller just can't say enough about Android these days. In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Schiller -- Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing -- said that most Android users are running old software because updates are slow to roll out.

"With their own data, only 16 percent of Android users are on year-old version of the operating system," Schiller said. "Over 50 percent are still on software that is two years old. A really big difference."

It's important to note that each Android OS update needs to be tested for several different hardware makers to make sure it's right for each one.

Further, Schiller trash talked the new Samsung Galaxy S IV, saying that it will be shipped with a year-old operating system because Android has a fragmentation issue.

"And that extends to the news we are hearing this week that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is being rumored to ship with an OS that is nearly a year old," Schiller said. "Customers will have to wait to get an update."

Despite Schiller's comments, Android-powered smartphones currently hold greater worldwide market share than Apple's iPhone. Apple's iPhone only represented about 19 percent of worldwide smartphone shipments in 2012 while all Android-powered smartphones accounted for about 70 percent.

But Schiller has an answer for that, too.

"At Apple we know that it's not just enough to have products pumped out in large numbers," Schiller said. "You have to love and use them. There is a lot of data showing a big disparity there."

Schiller was bad-mouthing Android earlier this week in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, where he said that iPhone users are more satisfied with their smartphone experience than Android users and that Androids are the kinds of phones given as free replacements to feature phones. He added that Android phones make you "sign up for nine accounts" out of the box because it isn't as seamless of an experience as iOS -- where Apple is responsible for both hardware and software.

It's interesting that Apple is starting to dig into Samsung and Android right around the release of the Samsung Galaxy S IV, which is due to make its first appearance today at the 7 p.m. ET launch event at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. The Samsung Galaxy S III made a big splash in the smartphone world, and the greater specs of the Galaxy S IV should mean increased popularity of the line.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV will feature a 5.0-inch 1080p display, a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor (or a 2GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos 5450 processor for the international version), 2GB of RAM, 16/32/64GB storage options, a removable SD card slot for up to 64GB, a 13MP rear-facing camera with Orb technology for compressed panorama shots, a 2MP front-facing camera with eye scrolling technology, 4G LTE connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, 3100 mAh battery and of course the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

Apple has hard a hard time keeping up the momentum of its products, and it shows in the company's shares. Apple shares have fallen from $702.10 in September to $428.35 as of this week.

I see no one had any issues with Samsung taking shots at Apple in their commercial though, right?

They also had nothing to say of importance. But you didn't have a problem with it then.

It's a game apple started. Need I remind you of all the "I'm a mac" vs PC commercials that ran for years?

So the Shill is bad-mouthing Samsung for a year old real OS ... meanwhile the iPhone runs on 2 year old technology with a pseudo OS.

I think the market is starting to prefer real technology driven functionality over over form.

What's funny is this so-called slightly outdated Android OS still resulted in a superior device to the iPhone. What does that say about iPhone? On paper, it sounds like Apple might have a valid point, but in reality, Apple knows they can't compete with the device which is why they compete in the courtrooms instead. (or lately, bad mouth competition as much as possible!)

Even if Apple products were worth buying, I don't know why anyone would want to support them just knowing about the anti-competitive tactics and freakishly desperate measures they take to achieve a monopoly they so badly want.

The point that really seems like it should grate the apple fanboys is the price raping they experience, every single time.

That apple stock controlling an entire wall street exchange - I guess the fanboys never watch the markets, because if they did, they would cry and whimper how badly they got raped, for years on end.

It's really astounding, immense greed incarnate, yet those OWS protesters loved showing off their iphones.

Talk about a disconnect.

Excuses??? .. the Shill is making the excuses ... all he's got is a "newer OS" on obsolete H/W. His whole play is an excuse.

Where's the iPhone quad core, Where the iPhone 4G, where's the iPhone external SD, where's the iPhone removable battery .. where's the 2GB of RAM ... where ... where ... where?

The iPhone is now playing follow the leader

They must include stupid pills in every iPhone box. Looks like you must have taken yours and someone else too.

In fact 34% of iPhone users think they have 4G ... the stupid pills work better than the iPhone !!

My twelve year old thinks the iPhone is cool, too.

They all do until they find out what it CANNOT do compared to JB 4.2!. This is a kicker for many who tries to wring the most out of their devices and demand functionality almost beyond what the hardware can provide sometimes.

It drive innovation in both hardware and software ending up with lower prices very capable devices to be had. Every exec wants their smartphone to replace thier PC and some managed it with a little compromise. It is a good thing from a personal perspective since the phone is so much more personal and available to the user at all times.

If apple had commercials with something other than fluff (wow we have siri, and an extra row of buttons), that I would understand.

I could see if you were comparing to the c-level exec at Samsung coming out saying "The iphone is stupid, I don't like it". Which is about what this guy is saying. If that happened, most here (not the fanbois) would be all over it.

Marketing has it place, without it, you dont go very far no matter how good the device is. This is not marketing, it just sounds like some idiot afraid for his job spewing crap from his mouth.

With Microsoft following suit. Nothing makes me want a Surface more than annoying hipster music and people jerking off with the snap-on keyboard. That tells you sooooo much about the product.

The reason for that Mr Sheep is that most people actually like Samsung. The same can't be said for Apple.

Nice trollin' btw ;)
