Auto Audi Will Bring Diesel-Powered A4 Sedan to the United States

Audi announces another diesel-powered vehicle bound for the US

In Europe, diesel vehicles are popular because the cost of gasoline is so high and diesel motors are usually more fuel-efficient. Relatively cheap gasoline in the United States has left diesel-powered cars without much of a following (Volkswagen has been the only company to stick by diesel-powered cars for the long haul in the U.S.).

However, the push for greater fuel efficiency standards has resulted in more diesel cars being offered within the U.S. Last year, Audi announced that it would be offering four new vehicles with diesel-power within the United States. This week, Audi announced that in addition to those four already announced vehicle, the next generation A4 destined for the U.S. will also have a diesel option. In this case, the A4 will be available with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TDI engine.

Audi of America President Scott Keogh explained the delay in offering a TDI engine on the A4 by stating, "This deep in its life cycle, it didn't make any sense to do all that dramatic re-engineering and re-architecting of the car to basically only have a two-year selling period."

Audi isn't the only automotive manufacturer planning to bring diesel-powered cars to the US. BMW has announced plans for diesels in 2013 and 2014. Mazda has also announced that it will bring its Mazda6 to the U.S. featuring diesel-power.

Chevrolet has also unveiled its Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel for the U.S. market. On the other hand, Ford says that it will reconsider diesel-power in the U.S. if there is enough demand.

But will it have Quattro?!?

I'm a diesel fanatic but it continues to disappoint me that I cannot get an all-wheel drive CAR with a diesel engine here in the USA. It doesn't appear the A4 will solve this problem either.

I really liked Audi's A3, which did offer a diesel, but not with AWD. People who live in the snow belt, like me, want AWD and the fuel economy of diesel yet we keep getting denied. You have to buy a $50,000+ SUV to get AWD diesel and that's just not in my budget. I want a hatchback, which is why I really liked the A3.

You never know, it might. They are also talking about bringing over the Golf Variant (Jetta Sport Wagon currently) in diesel, potentially with AWD and possibly even a manual transmission!

i considered moving to europe just to get the 4wd version of the golf tdi i bought... that is my perfect car.

and this is hardly news. audi is the higher priced vw, which already has diesel in its passats and golfs in the us...

Audis diesels are second to none. i just could not afford the constant maintenance that come standard with Audi vehicles.

Don't believe the hype. If you can afford a brand new Audi, you should be able to afford the maintenance. I'm on my second used A4 now and haven't had any major problems with either. If you're even slightly competent with a wrench, you can take care of the oil changes / spark plugs / filters etc. that the dealers charge crazy labor on.

The nagging issues with Audis stopped two generations ago. People still talk about it like it was yesterday. Same with the crap Mexico built MkIII/IV Golfs. The MkV/VI are rock solid.

That's because they still occupy the lower rungs in just about every quality ranking. I WILL say they have improved (the industry as a whole has improved significantly). I'd imagine they'll be on par with Ford in their next gen vehicles.

Tax advantaged

Diesels are popular in Europe because they're tax-advantaged. European emissions mandates are also currently less strict than those in the US, though I believe Euro6 harmonizes them with US federal standards (not so sure about CARB).

Still, I'd prefer diesel for the efficiency gains and longer range, ability to run on biodiesel, and torque..

Be forewarned!! I've owned two of these custom bodied Volkswagens and I'm hear to tell you they are absolutely the worst vehicles especially coming from Germany. They are stunningly bad. Both of mine were in the shop on a monthly basis fixing "things" that stopped working,

But...you already HAVE the TDI in Europe. And as far as I know, you already have it in left-hand-drive; AND the body is the same as the current A4, so it means that you don't have to re-certify.

Why is it so hard to find a competent executive that actually knows what they're talking about and that don't make dumb, non-sensical statements like this (that bears little relation to reality)?
