Ferrari looks to take on Porsche, McLaren

It looks like the hybrid supercar wars are on, and Ferrari has fired the latest shot. Porsche revealed the 918 Spyder, McLaren went official with the P1, and now Ferrari has the… LaFerrari.
The LaFerrari is the successor to the Enzo and brings with it an 800hp V12 engine that revs to an eye popping 9,000 rpm. Its peak torque of 516 lb-ft is reached at a "lower" 6,750 rpm. In addition to the V12 monster behind the driver, the LaFerrari also features a 163hp (199 lb-ft) electric motor.
With all of this power on tap, Ferrari says that the LaFerrari can scoot to 60 mph in less than three seconds and hit 124 mph in under seven seconds. The LaFerrari will keep on accelerating at an astonishing rate (186 mph in 15 seconds) until it reaches a top speed of 217 mph.

Not much else is known about this crazy hybrid other than the fact that is has 41/59 (front/rear) weight distribution, 19" wheels up front, and 20" wheels in the back.
As we get more info on the LaFerrari, we'll keep you posted.

The electric motor makes more sense for a turbo engine car because it makes up for any lag, but most Tesla reviewers say that the the instant response is significant over even naturally aspirated cars, so I guess that's a reason.

I wonder if Ferrari is going to have the electric motor drive the front wheels. The had a really wacky AWD system in the FF, so electric FWD and gas RWD is a real possibility.

I do like that high performance car makers are paying more attention to electric motors, as it'll help high power motors be produced more efficiently. They can approach 5kW/kg, i.e. a 400 hp motor may weigh under 150lbs, and induction motors don't need any rare earths either.

I also want to point out that they keep the visual tech at a conservative minimum for this class of vehicle, no centralized Touchscreen, instead a very pronounced P***y magnet takes it's place. But they do appear to have a very interesting display screen for the actual speeds and monitoring, I wonder what type of tech/panels they use for these? It would probably have to be a custom size/cut for this car.

The valvetrain requirements of a typical NA engine change as the RPMs do. The camshaft profile for lower RPM power is quite a bit different than trying to make power at higher RPM.

For example, in the small block V8 world, many people change to a different cam. The more aggressive the cam, the worse the engine performs at low RPM. More power at the top end, but very choppy and laggy at the low end, even when still normally aspirated.

To solve this, some makers use VVT employing several lobe profiles, or even just cam degree'ing.

But, having a low end assist in the form of an electric motor leaves the engine designer to only concentrate on the top end. That's one of the reasons why you see this Ferrari hitting 9000RPM. You don't have to worry about low RPM performance anymore.

Think of the possibilities with electric motors at all 4 wheels. Computers can control all aspects of the drive, making cornering and acceleration a very simple task, no more feathering the throttle to keep from breaking your tyres free, no guessing trying to keep the car from oversteering.

While I understand the sentiment, I think its lame lol. I still prefer to pride myself on actually being able to DRIVE. Having a computer do anything for you kind of takes away from the sport side of things. I dont even like traction control, so I'm kind of a nut I guess. IMO, most people are already horrible drivers, no need to give them less to pay attention to. You know after people get used to it, they will just get careless...
