Ferrari looks to take on Porsche, McLaren

It looks like the hybrid supercar wars are on, and Ferrari has fired the latest shot. Porsche revealed the 918 Spyder, McLaren went official with the P1, and now Ferrari has the… LaFerrari.

The LaFerrari is the successor to the Enzo and brings with it an 800hp V12 engine that revs to an eye popping 9,000 rpm. Its peak torque of 516 lb-ft is reached at a "lower" 6,750 rpm. In addition to the V12 monster behind the driver, the LaFerrari also features a 163hp (199 lb-ft) electric motor.

With all of this power on tap, Ferrari says that the LaFerrari can scoot to 60 mph in less than three seconds and hit 124 mph in under seven seconds. The LaFerrari will keep on accelerating at an astonishing rate (186 mph in 15 seconds) until it reaches a top speed of 217 mph.

Not much else is known about this crazy hybrid other than the fact that is has 41/59 (front/rear) weight distribution, 19" wheels up front, and 20" wheels in the back.

As we get more info on the LaFerrari, we'll keep you posted.

I've been looking at buying a Ferrari

Seriously, I have been looking.

The 456 Italia is pretty nice, but I so want to drive this. Hate the name, but can get past that pretty quick. Price will be a factor, but if the rumors on how much come true, then it's actually competitive.

Problem is if it truly is an Enzo successor, than it will only be offered to existing Enzo owners first in very limited quantities. Ferrari NA is being very tight lipped on it.

Oh well, I guess I could slum it with the 456.

Yeah, really slumming it. I know how you feel 100%. I've been trying to upgrade my fleet of Intergalactic MkIII star ships to the new MkIV, but the never ending hurdles of Federation politics has made it nigh but impossible. I was really looking forward to making the Kessel run in under 5 parsecs, but it appears I'm just gonna have to slum it with 7.

Upgrade them yourself.

Mine doesn't look like much, but I've made a few special modifications myself... It'll make .5 past lightspeed.

Now if only the parsec wasn't measuring distance instead of time...

PS: I'm so smart!

You know, it sort of ruins the joke when I have to explain it. What I said was the equilvent of saying doing the 1/4 mile (Kessel run) in under 5 seconds (parsecs) instead of 7 seconds (parsecs). It is entirely correct as written and you...nevermind...

Get off your Taun Tauns and fight like Jedi. Batha Fodder I tell you.

Listen here, you scruffy nerf herder, Lucas explained away the quote by saying the Kessel Run was a treacherous stretch of space and Solo did indeed mean 'parsecs' in that he did it in a shorter distance (tighter curves, came closer to the black holes/gravity wells/giant space sarlacc/what-have-you)

PS: I'm so geek!

Yeah ... you've really been looking. What was that Ferrari model you were checking out? The "456"? Funny that, it's the >> 458 << Italia, the "45" referring to the engine displacement (4.5L) and the "8" indicating that it's a V8.

Kindly keep your fantasies to yourself.

No tolerance for autocorrect, huh. Don't know why that happened but yes, it's a 458.

Believe what you want. I really don't care and have nothing to prove to you.

I honestly thought you were talking about the Ferrari 456 (the old 90s model) myself. That seems like a more "attainable" Ferrari for most people here on DT.

I doubt that many DT'ers can afford a $230k Italia ;)

I'm not saying that YOU couldn't afford it. I'm just saying that when I saw "456", that seemed like a much more "manageable" purchase for a typical DT'er since they can be had for sub $70,000.

By topkill on 3/5/2013 2:42:17 PM , Rating: 2
Yeah, when I saw you put the "456" instead of "458", I just assumed it was a typo.

Nothing more irritable than grammar Nazi's while you're trying to have a discussion. LOL

By the way, Car and Driver did their annual "Lightning Lap" this month and the 458 came in just barely behind the Mosler...very impressive.

I'm betting more people simply don't like the show-offy attitude of people who buy cars like this. For the same reason that someone coming in and talking about upgrading their water cooled 3nd place world record OC'd i7, quad-SLI GTX 680's to a slightly faster OC'd i7, and quad SLI GTX titans because it's not fast enough would also probably receive negative criticism (and slight doubt by many as to the truthfulness of the statement).

What was "show-offy" about what he said? I really wanted to know more about the possible purchase and maybe some other cars he was considering. Not often I get to talk to someone who's in the market for this kind of car. Makes for an interesting conversation IMO. Better than listening to a bunch of losers which, quite frankly, all sound the same to me.

Whether or not this was his intention, it's very difficult to talk about "contemplating buying a $1.3 million car" so casually without sounding like you're showing off.

Maybe if you have self esteem issues it might but I don't see it that way at all. I found it refreshing until the anal police showed up. Maybe some other potential owners would've posted too and we could've had an interesting conversation for once. But noooo the losers came in and quickly squashed all that. No wonder these people only hang out with themselves.

I'm with Spuke, I think that would be a good conversation. Apparition, what kind of engineering business do you have?(field wise) I'm going to guess your a mech. engr?

Darn, I was looking to see a nice custom Offenhauser intake manifold when he said show offy.

I appreciate that. But others are correct. Know your audience. DT is a mix of people, but most are younger techies. When the discussion on cell phones degenerates into an argument over a $600 costing too much, me looking for a 1/4mil car does seem out of place. I get it.

We've had automotive discussions before and I know you appreciate the hobby.

Honestly I was considering the 458 and the McLaren MP4. Both are similarly priced. I've driven the 458, but not the McLaren yet. The Gallardo is in the same price range, but I didn't like it as much as the 458.

But I was way wrong on the LaFerrari. My first info was from a salesman at Ferrari NA who insisted it would be in the $500k range. Now that it's rumored to be over 1mil, that puts me out of the market. Not that I could have gotten my hands on one anyway. Rumor is that they are going to pull another page from the F50 debacle and only offer this car to existing Enzo owners, and only with a lease and non-competition clause.

I don't find it out of place, the article is about Ferrari's next top car. I do understand what you're saying though, I just find it annoying.

I haven't driven a Lambo or Ferrari before. They're both way out my price range. Thought about doing one of those driving tour deals just so I could get some seat time. That McLaren sounds very interesting from the videos and articles I've seen on it. Plus it's turbo'd and I love turbo's! I did consider a used Maserati once but I'd have to do most of my own maintenance to make that happen (well to make it happen with the wife:) ) and I really wanted the Cambiocorsa tranny but I was told clutch jobs are in the $3-5k range. No thanks. Could've settled for the standard 6 speed with WAY lower maintenance costs. My latest fascination is a 3.8L 911 swap in a Boxster. This will more than likely happen although it will be a couple of years before I have the space to do that.

I'll trade you one of my MkIII's for a Corvette. Just go ahead and give me the keys/title and I promise to make sure one ship gets dropped off. I'm good for it, ask around.

Yup, it's a nice car. I like it.
