The film is passing on DVDs and the cinema, and will directly to the Xbox 360 today

In the realm of music and movie consumption, all signs point to increasingly digital methods. Gone are the days of CDs and DVDs -- now it's all about services like Spotify and Netflix. This shift made a strong point today, as an indie British film will be the first to be distributed through game consoles rather than DVDs or cinema.

The indie British comedy "Pulp," which is about a struggling comic book publisher, will be released through Microsoft's Xbox console via Xbox Live starting today.

Typically, movies make their way to movie theaters or go straight to DVD once completed, but according to "Pulp's" creator -- Adam Hamdy -- there aren't many distribution opportunities for up-and-coming filmmakers in the UK.

"At the top end of the indie film business the UK is still pretty healthy, but it's the middle tier and the lower budget tier that's struggling," said Hamdy. "Where they would have been released straight to DVD, the opportunities for doing that have really declined. Retailers have gone out of business because of the threat of piracy and because of legitimate digital downloading. There has been a decline in the middle to lower budget tier of films that used to get made."

Pav Bhardwaj, Xbox Live's product manager, said the console will offer films like this more often.

"It's a great fit," said Bhardwaj. "The film is really well aligned with our audience. All our audience like that sort and types of film and it's great to support British talent."

Now could be an especially great time for artists to offer content via game consoles, since China may soon lift its video game console ban. This would open opportunities in a huge market.
