Sony wants to be #3
Sony has announced that it has aspirations of becoming the third largest company in the global smartphone market right behind Apple and Samsung. To make that job, Sony will have to beat Chinese companies including Huawei Technology and ZTE.
Both of those Chinese smartphone makers have eyes on the third-place spot in the global smartphone market. The challenge for Sony will be that both Huawei and ZTE are very strong in their home market of China, which also happens to be one of the biggest growth markets in the world.
Currently, Sony sits in the fourth-place spot in the global smartphone market according to IDC. That spot puts Sony right between the two Chinese smartphone makers with Huawei in third and ZTE in fifth place. Apple and Samsung are way ahead of the other manufacturers in the smartphone market combined for over half the global market.
Xperia Z
Sony recently unveiled its Z and ZL "superphones" at CES 2013 that will help the company attack the high-end of the smartphone market. The flagship Xperia Z is a waterproof smartphone that packs in a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 5" 1080p display, and a 13MP camera.
