Seven more apps get the axe

Yahoo and its new CEO Marissa Mayer are leaving no stone unturned in an effort to turn the company around and return to profitability. Last week, Yahoo announced that it would start forcing all telecommuters to start working in a local office or quit. Some saw this move as a way to announce layoffs without officially calling it a layoff.

Yahoo has now announced that it will be shutting down seven of its products, including its mobile app for BlackBerry smartphone users that will no longer be available/supported after April 1. Yahoo will also stop supporting its Yahoo Avatars. These avatars were used on Yahoo services such as its instant messenger and Facebook.
 
The remainder of the seven applications that will be terminated include the Yahoo App Search, Yahoo Sports IQ, Yahoo Clues, and Yahoo Message Board website, and the Yahoo Updates API.

"The most critical question we ask is whether the experience is truly a daily habit that still resonates for all of you today," wrote Jay Rossiter, Yahoo's executive vice president of Platforms.

Mayer is quite familiar with the shuttering of multiple products at one time since she is a former Google exec, and Google routinely shuts down multiple products via its "spring cleaning" announcements.

Mayer had previously announced that Yahoo would be reducing its slate of 60 to 75 apps to a more manageable 12 to 15.

I'm betting the same thing could be done from the website.

Like, when it notices that you're on a phone and shows you the mobile version of the site, there could be a button there that would download your contacts in some standard format - I don't even know what it would be, an XML file or something - that could then be automated into your phone's contact list.

Or whatever. At this point I think you're grasping...I would imagine that many people have FB "friends" that they don't want in their contacts list, and vice-versa.

At the end of the day, I still say that if something was hard for 95% of your users to do on your website, then there's something wrong with your website.

I do agree wholeheartedly with your comments about the CILF's recent war on working from home. And her failing to lead by example.

It was just an example but the crux was that some apps make things easier.

I agree that website design should be better, and agree in principle that many apps are just html wrappers and don't inherently contribute extra functionality. Personally, I run almost everything with a desktop environment on mobile hardware because the mobile sites are way too limiting.

But ease of use is king. Don't underestimate the lemmings who can't figure out how to set the time on the VCR (to quote an old reference).
