iOS 6.1.3 likely means the end for one popular jailbreak

Earlier this month a jailbreak for iOS devices launched called Evasi0n. The jailbreak proved to be incredibly popular racking up 800,000 downloads in the first six hours it was available – after all, this was the first “untethered” jailbreak available for the iPhone 5.

However, Forbes reports that Apple is currently beta testing an update for iOS that crushes the Evasi0n jailbreak.

According to David Wang, one of the creators of the jailbreak, an analysis of the 6.1.3 Beta 2 update determined that the update patches at least one of the five iOS flaws that the jailbreak exploits. Specifically, the new iOS update patches a flaw in the time zone settings for the operating system.

“If one of the vulnerabilities doesn’t work, evasi0n doesn’t work,” he says. “We could replace that part with a different vulnerability, but [Apple] will probably fix most if not all of the bugs we’ve used when 6.1.3 comes out.”

Wang expects that could be as long as another month before the 6.1.3 update is available to the public, so for now users of his jailbreak can continue using it with no problems. And considering that any 6.1.x update is unlikely to add any new functionality, most people will just stick with the 6.1.2 Evasi0n jailbreak permanently.

"Consumers don't get ripped off when they buy iPhones, carriers do. And I'm actually happy about that."

LOL... That is true in the US anyhow. At least until the next contract negotiation comes up. When the current deals were made Apple had no real competition. Even the latest one to get the iPhone, Sprint says they wont make a single penny off the iPhone for 6 years. That is how much they spent for it... Anyhow, no carriers will be selling hte farm on the next round since Google and MS have caught up and surpassed Apple.

I doubt that will happen. Apple has a very strong position in the US market. No carrier has the balls. I wish they did honestly because we ALL pay the price... but they don't. They cave.

It's not about that... Its about options. If you are going to buy something, and there is only one product that matches, with no viable competition, and to make money yourself you have to have it, you pay top dollar. If there is a cheaper alternative you don't. Its not balls, its math and economics.

Do you really think Sprint would make an iPhone deal today that put them in a 6 year hole before making any profit? Looking at all the phones on the market, the iPhone isnt even close to the top of the line.

It doesn't matter what your personal opinion on the iPhone is. The fact is that it is the single best selling smartphone in the US and nearly matches the entirety of Android sales all by itself. Whether or not it deserves the accolades is completely irrelevant because customers are still demanding it.

Yes. And every single carrier would do it again. Today. Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint all make that deal every single year. In fact they made that deal again as recently as November 2012. Not offering the iPhone for $200 would be a PR and sales disaster... for the carriers.

$200 has nothing to do with it, its the carriers price that we are talking about. Do you seriously think they are paying the same price for deals in 2012 as they did in 2007 to 2011? Got data?

"Yes. And every single carrier would do it again. "

There, I found the link I was thinking of earlier, but didn't have time to search... You think they will do deals like this again? This was Oct 2011, when Android was on version 2.3 and wasn't anywhere near as good as iPhone. AT&T and Verizon are were paying through the nose as well. Its just not going to happen anymore. Not for the same high prices. Its simple economics.
