LTE connectivity will bring new entertainment options and more

General Motors and AT&T have announced a partnership that will bring 4G LTE connectivity to vehicles within the United States and Canada. The collaboration between the two companies will begin in 2014 with 2015 model year vehicles.

GM says that an integrated LTE connection will allow advances for in-vehicle communications and entertainment capability. Among the services that will be available thanks to the in-vehicle LTE connectivity will be Wi-Fi hotspots, streaming video entertainment for backseat passengers, and faster application downloads.

GM says that the enhancements will build on the OnStar portfolio of built-in connected services.

“In addition to allowing consumers to bring in and connect to personal mobile devices, the vehicle will also act as its own mobile device, enabling embedded vehicle capabilities,” said Mary Chan, president, Global Connected Consumer, General Motors.  “Turning this vision into a reality starts with enabling fast, reliable and responsive connectivity within the vehicle.  Through this built-in 4G LTE connection we have the opportunity to reinvent the mobile experience inside a vehicle.”

GM says that it plans to announce additional carrier partners allowing its other brands such as Opel and Vauxhall to offer LTE connectivity with details and options announced at a later date.

The other big issue, is when I buy a car, I expect to keep it a little longer than my phone. Phone technology is changing so fast. Think how behind the connectivity in these will be in 5 (10?) years.

I don't want a phone built into my car, I want better integration with my current (and future) phones.

Agreed.

I"ll just wait till the first car gets hacked.

This could take a bite out of Low-Jack's business. GPS location of your stolen car...."There's an App for that".

Track your teen driver, track your cheating spouse, track your neighborhood drug-dealer, Insurance companies tracking your driving habits, etc..

May seem a bit far-fetched, but is it really out of the realm of possibility?

Ahmen, let the phone do all the work. Just need the blue tooth audio speakers and mic from the car.

That too. Although it didn't really matter a lot with current/prior generations of OnStar as long as the base level of service was still available; since nothing they did really needed anything beyond voice/sms capabilities.

1st gen customers were hit when 1g voice was retired at the end of 2007 (only 2002-05 customers were eligible for new hardware).

We're probably a half dozen years out from VZW shutting down the 2g network current units run on, and for basic use ATTs LTE network is probably safe for at least a decade (although once LTE-A is available actually using your car for data won't be particularly attractive).

A big part of the problem is that the auto industry still doesn't seem to have grasped that with modern cars lasting so much longer than they did 40 years ago the number of people driving something more than a few years old who aren't only doing so due to poverty is much higher than it used to be.

Yup, I wish automakers would go back to standardized din slots so its easier to swap out the head unit. It seems pretty likely that you are going to want to do just that every 5 years or so. My 2005 tacoma came with none of this stuff and its in about the same shape as when I bought it.

Not just standard sizes, but separate core car features from the radio. When my Moms 05 Impala stereo died the new stereo, a box connected to the can bus to implement bundled functions (ex beeping if the keys left in the ignition), and installation labor were roughly equal parts of the total cost.

At least in her car fitting a replacement faceplate over the opening was a simple affair (and it was a standard 1.5 din space inside), my 06 Buick looks like it will need either cutting a hole or replacing a large chunk of the dash plastic; which will probably make replacing mine make hers look cheap. (Mine still works but I want a 3.5mm input and/or bluetooth so I can hook an external music source to it.)
