New console will reportedly let you use your smartphone as a remote control

Tonight Sony Corp. (TYO:6758) is expected to announce details about its much-anticipated successor to the PlayStation 3, code-named Orbis.  Launched in 2006, the PS3 has had a rocky road, generally being third in sales, behind Nintendo Comp., Ltd. (TYO:7974) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT).  But the seventh generation console did succeed in pushing Sony's Blu-Ray technology as the next generation optical media of choice.

Ahead of the official announcements, Kotaku is reporting potentially leaked details of the eighth generation follow-up, which is expected to launch in time for the holidays this year.  The site writes:

Our source—the same reliable source who back in early 2012 told us the codename for Sony's next console and the codename for Microsoft's next console—tells us that there are two models planned for the new machine, and that pricing won't be announced until later this year, possibly around E3. The current plan, our source says, is to release them at $429 and $529, but that could change.

Those prices would be significantly cheaper than the PS3, which launched starting at $499 USD for a 20 GB console.

The console will reportedly get a new controller with a smaller touchpad in the center, and possibly a special button on the controller to share content.  The source also indicates that you'll be able to use your tablet or smartphone as a remote control/controller for the console.  And you'll be able to run client apps on popular tablets/smartphones to schedule games to download or to chat with your PlayStation Network buddies.

The new PlayStation will locally network via Vita, and will feature a new service called PlayStation Eye (not to be confused with the Eye Toy) which allows you to watch streams of your friends' playing games (if they allow it).  PlayStation Plus will be replaced by PlayStation World; most of the networked services will be only available via this premium option (Microsoft is going a similar route with Xbox Live).

Are these details fact or fiction?  We likely will find out tonight.

It's not unified memory but $430 can buy you a combo FX8120+7870+16GB of RAM. The CPU will be beefier than the A10 derivative in the PS4.

Obviously there's are much more than that to a PC so it'll cost more than the PS4 in the end but the PC will be a PC as well.

Lets tally up actual cost comparison.
OS = ~$100
Case = $50-$150
Power Supply = $50-$100
Keyboard, Mouse = $30-$130
Blu-Ray drive = $50
Hard Drive = $60+

FX8120 = $160
7870 = $200
16GB DDR3 = $100

Total = $800-$1050

The cost is not even close, so people saying that they are overcharging for the PS3 hardware vs what you could buy/build are incorrect.

You didn't try very hard, did you?

Built at Newegg:
Total: $549.91

AMD FX4100 : $104.99
Radeon 7850: $159.99
8GB HyperX RAM: $44.99
Gigabyte Mobo: $54.99
1 TB HD - $74.99
Case: $19.99
575W PS: $24.99
LG BlueRay: $49.99
Mouse and Keyboard: $14.98
OS: Linux (free)

A couple of things. Your proc, FX8210 is a FAR faster processor than is in the PS4. You comparing it to an FX8210 because it's an 8-core proc is way off. Even the 4-core FX4100 I used is going to be way over the proc in the PS4.

Graphics card: I used a 7850 because the claimed speed is somewhat better than 7850 but not as high as a 7870.

OS: Linux is free. Steam is on linux. Once the SteamBox launches, a lot more games should be available. This discussion is about hardware so OS should not be factored in anyway.

Memory: Why did you put 16GB memory in your build? PS4 has 8 GB. My price for RAM is even quite high compared to what you see if you watch the sales. I see 8GB for $20-$30 quite often.

HD: 1TB. No clue what PS4 configurations will have.

The cost is not even close...

You're not making a fair comparison. Delete the keyboard, mouse, operating system, toss in a wireless controller. No mention has been made of the hard drive in the PS4, so that's not really comparable yet. Add to the fact that these are retail priced items in the system build and it's looking like the PS4 is kind of overpriced for what it is.

System 2: $558.87
2TB HD, Wireless controller, no Blueray.

AMD FX4100 : $104.99
Radeon 7850: $159.99
8GB HyperX RAM: $44.99
Gigabyte Mobo: $54.99
2 TB HD - $104.99
Case: $19.99
575W PS: $24.99
Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless controller for Windows: $43.93 (Amazon)

This system is probably a more realistic competitor to the PS4 considering there's no real need for a Blueray to deliver the games for Windows/Linux. I slapped a 2TB HD in there and a wireless controller making this system something of a SteamBox. Some of these components could be had for less if you watch the sales. Again, these components already had the retailer's markup added.
