The Windows Mobile era took a heavy toll on Microsoft's mobile efforts

In a new candid interview with CBS Corp.'s (CBS) titular station, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) co-founder and famed philanthropist Bill Gates discusses his former company's struggles in the mobile era.  Microsoft today accounts for less than 5 percent of the smartphone market, according to most estimates.

For a time, Microsoft held nearly a quarter of the fledgling smartphone market (circa 2004).  But it failed to keep up with rivals like Google Inc. (GOOG) and Apple, Inc. (AAPL), sticking for years with the increasingly dated Windows Mobile platform.  In November 2010, Microsoft launched a new operating system, Windows Phone, which was ambitious but lacked strong third-party hardware support.  Today Microsoft is still struggling to sell the market on its latest mobile OS -- Windows Phone 8.

Bill Gates in the interview calls Microsoft's former cellphone strategy "clearly a mistake", remarking, "There's a lot of things like cellphones where we didn't get out in the lead early.  We didn't miss cellphones, but the way that we went about it didn't allow us to get the leadership."

The tech icon says that both he and current CEO (and close friend) Steve Ballmer are both incredibly "self-critical".  He comments, "He [Ballmer] and I are not satisfied that in terms of breakthrough things that we're doing everything possible."

Mr. Gates expressed confidence, though, that it's not too late for Microsoft to claw its way to a significant mobile market share.  He's a big fan of Windows 8 and Microsoft's Surface tablet.

Microsoft is reportedly aiming to unify the Windows and Windows Phone platforms under one consistent set of mostly overlapping APIs and user interface themes, to allow users to feel more comfortable with both form factors, and to help developers save time deploying cross-platform apps.  The first unified release, Windows Blue, may land late this summer.

The revisions are also accompanied with some big leadership change.  Windows President Steven Sinofsky was driven out and new rising stars are taking his place at the company.  Some investors have called on CEO Ballmer to step down, but for now Mr. Ballmer is hanging tight in the top spot, vocal as ever.

Mobile has been Chandelsheker province, till completed & tablet moved in. However, in time, many backward steps have been taken, now winding out.

from 45 nm to present, CCD was changed to cmos, although CCD is correct name, Vista sent manufacturers flying, with No preperation. 2 processors on one die, died. transistor with capacitor to slow cpu/gpu down caused blurrring. two way crossbar does work, however.

SSD introduced was lie in speed & hybrid still waiting. .06 cents for HDD compared to .60 cents Gb, too much. FinFET, fet meaning Field Effect technology, Is Large slug of energy on thin wire, wire getting All Goof Up when energy splats. so FET at 20nm while wire at 14 nm, not too bright & like early 1960 FET, just too much to be digital.

2011/1974 Pin Cpu, still waiting rev, next shot in April as intel prepare cpu for all Gen3 mainboard. AMD is half Gen2, half gen3, so basicly gen2 with adapater. Not too good.

many improvements in 5 years, yet most fundumental improvements, Bust. Windows 8 waits for generation 3. 7.9600. Whole Step Up. computing is so degraded, especially in laptop accelerated processing, no one even notices abridgement of unit think is latest, which is in fact, Defective by all standards.
Both AMD & Intel have stopped making new gpcpu devices, waiting for channel to clear. TV, Backlighting, Joke. No Such Thing. LED is Better for other reason, yet generations of display material, after generation 6 have shown no improvement & electronic thing. burn in thing. generation 9 waiting, yet not really any improvement. Plasma, finer pixels should be better, most 720P course displays, way to bright. High Refresh, come on,600 Hzl, way,way too many. 3D another Joke ending.

so with so much crap in crappa & so little fix it or even serious improvement, public has bought 5 years of intentional poor engineering, some terrible. most real deception.

Windows 8 might break bench of impostures, many pundits by name. only.

finally gen three is emerging as 2 memory stick, waiting for cpu, gen 3 only gamers mostly same as predecessors as waitings. just barely over edge into true gen3, yet still needing massive revisions.

that State of Art & might be several years to find next step, 3Mp x4 Mp displays. Hope Plasma is Choice. However, ib m announced new 6 core 36 part cpu. i bm is just annoucing aredy in use, except now sophisticated enough, for single line processing, with 6 options. already cache2 is bit of seperate parts.. Smell, just maybe another perfected breathe, might be enough. Waiting for fabled 1964, SSD CPU Batch. 3 x4 Mp TV, Consumer affordable 2017. upswing cameras, computers, everything. Are they Even Ready for Gen3, let 'Lone next batch....
