He also wants to ban styrofoam
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to bring some new ideas to the table at his State of the City address, including a push for
more electric vehicle
At the State of the City address, which will take place today at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Mayor Bloomberg will propose the addition of parking spaces specifically for EVs. In fact, he wants 20 percent of any new parking added to the city to be EV-only, where the appropriate charging cables will be available for an easy hook-up. The city makes about 10,000 new spots annually.
Residents have already started speaking out about the idea, either saying that there aren't enough EVs in the city to justify the proposal or that it will likely increase adoption.
Mayor Bloomberg has been a major EV advocate in NYC.
In 2007, he set a goal to make 13,000 of NYC's taxi's hybrids by 2012 in a project called the
"Taxi of Tomorrow."
Mayor Bloomberg and
Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares announced that the Nissan NV200 had been selected as the "Taxi of Tomorrow."
By the end of 2011, it was announced that the city would
receive six Nissan Leaf EV taxis
In addition to his EV push, Mayor Bloomberg will also propose the banning of styrofoam and the increase of recycling by 30 percent by 2017 at today's State of the City address.
The proposals will have to be approved by City Council, which could take a couple of months.

A good mother would tell you to eat your vegetables.
Since when is Bloomberg or any mayor a city's mother? The idea that they can tax parking or making stopping light to direct traffic is far different than regulating styrofoam.
This kind of detailed micromanagement is absurd. This kind of garbage comes up when people in charge (elected and otherwise) fail to recognize and appreciate individual freedoms. If they recognized and appreciated individual freedom, they would make an effort to stop their infringement at a reasonable place.
In other words, they would say "this far is reasonable, but That far is not." Ideally in a Republic like ours, the people would determine just how far.
Unfortunately as others have stated, New Yorkers deserve what they vote for. One day, when Bloomberg is sending his goons around to wipe their butt for them, maybe they'll wake up and kick these upstarts to the curb where they belong.
As far as the rest of us... we are intelligent and independent enough to figure out how to eat, what to drink from, etc. The fools who wish to bring that prison mentality elsewhere need to back off.

Cities have this problem... it's called pollution. It's a serious problem. It's not just bad for buildings and monuments, but also for everyone's health. What he's doing here is more important than anything else he's done. I didn't think much of the guy until I read this article. I guess politicians can't be evil all the time.
