Cydia had been installed 1.7 million times by Tuesday

A new jailbreak for iOS finally arrived earlier this week, and it looks like a lot of Apple users were eager to try it out.

According to Jay Freeman, an administrator at alt appstore Cydia (a marketplace for unapproved applications), the new evasi0n jailbreak for iOS 6.x devices was installed 800,000 times within six hours of its release.

Freeman further revealed that Cydia had been installed 1.7 million times by Tuesday, and had about 14,000 hits per minute at peak download times. This caused the server to crash several times.

The evasi0n jailbreak  allows users to install unauthorized apps onto iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices. More specifically, it supports iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5, iPad 2/3/4, iPad mini and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generations).

The new evasi0n jailbreak is the first for iOS 6.x, and is also the first release since the Redsn0w jailbreak for 5.1.1. Making jailbreaks for iOS devices have become increasingly difficult since Apple has tried to crack down on security and keep iOS as closed as possible.

I think when THAT many people want out of the walled garden, the use of the garden is entirely flawed to begin with.

Yet another example of someone who has failed to keep up and sees things as they were in the past, when Apple was one of the smaller players. iOS has close to a 500 million user installed base, and some time in the next eighteen months, may well get close to a billion users. For iOS a couple of million is not a big number. If iOS was flawed then demand for it would be falling not rising. Tens of millions are queuing to get into the walled garden and iOS has by far the highest loyalty rating of any mobile OS and the highest retention rate.

If a very small minority want to fiddle about with their devices and it's OS in order to stretch it's capabilities, but also take a few risks, good luck to them, but it means very little in the bigger scheme of things.

If you want to talk up the unhappiness of iOS device users, in order to have a dig at Apple, fine. But in order to be honest such talk should always mention that however unhappy iOS users are they are, by all measurements, less unhappy than Android users.
