Belkin plans to buy Linksys

Cisco has been looking to ditch its Linksys home networking division since December and reportedly hired Barclays PLC to help find a buyer. Cisco originally acquired Linksys in 2003 for $500 million to get itself into the consumer networking market.

It looks like Cisco has finally found a buyer with Belkin announcing this week that it intends to acquire the Linksys division. The deal will see Belkin acquiring Linksys products, technology, the Linksys brand, and employees. Belkin says the Linksys main office will be located in Irvine, California.

“We’re very excited about this announcement,” said Chet Pipkin, CEO of Belkin. “Our two organizations share many core beliefs – we have similar beginnings and share a passion for meeting the real needs of our customers through the strengths of an entrepreneurial culture. Belkin’s ultimate goal is to be the global leader in the connected home and wireless networking space and this acquisition is an important step to realizing that vision.”

Belkin says that it will maintain the Linksys brand and offer support for existing Linksys products as part of the transaction. Belkin will honor all valid warranties for current and future Linksys products. Belkin also says that after the transaction closes it will own about 30% of the retail home and small business network market.

The terms of the transaction are unannounced and the deal is subject to customary closing conditions. Belkin and Cisco expect the deal to close in March 2013.

Yes they do, but this could be positive for Belkin networking products. Belkin might ditch their under performing products and allow the Linksys division to build premium products to compete against the latest ASUS products.

True, or they may cut corners and destroy the Linksys brand. Either way, I'm not going to be a Belkinksys guinea pig.

I bought a Belkin router, and it went bad in less than 3 months. Not a big deal, this happens with most routers I buy. I put in for a RMA. They sent it to the wrong address (I doublechecked my input to make sure I put in the right address) and then tried to charge me >$150 for a replacement router I never got for a router I spent $80 on in the first place.

Their service structure is horrible, not just the service. Their people could be working their butts off trying to make people happy, but the whole structure of their support department and the policies and mechanisms they have to deal with strangle their abilities. This problem stems from the management.

I have sworn off buying all Belkin products, even at work, because of this. It's their loss, because I was buying >200 server PDU power cords a year from them for the test lab I support. Now I buy APC power cords. I now go to Technical Cable Company for network cables as well. That's easily >$5000 a year, for the last 3 years, of profit they're losing, just from me, all because of an $80 router. I wonder how many others are out there doing the same, yet don't speak up.
