Google said its profit jumped 13 percent to $10.65 a share from the year-ago quarter

Google has reported impressive fourth quarter earnings for 2012, but missed analyst expectations on the revenue front.

Google's revenue was $11.34 billion in Q4 2012, not including Motorola Home's sales of $802 million. Analysts were expecting $12.4 billion for the quarter. But total revenues were $14.42 billion for the quarter, which was a 36 percent boost from Q4 2011.

But there was a bit of confusion as far as revenue goes. Google's treasurer said that analysts may not have adjusted their numbers to show that Motorola Home business, which Google sold for $2.35 billion in December, would be accounted for as a discontinued operation in the Q4 2012 earnings announced.

Google said its profit jumped 13 percent to $10.65 a share from the year-ago quarter of $9.50 a share.

Google's price per click, where advertisers pay Google each time someone clicks on an ad, rose 2 percent in Q4 2012 from Q3 2012. However, it was a 6 percent decrease from Q4 2011.

“We ended 2012 with a strong quarter,” said Google CEO Larry Page. “Revenues were up 36 percent year-on-year, and 8 percent quarter-on-quarter. And we hit $50 billion in revenues for the first time last year – not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half. In today’s multi-screen world we face tremendous opportunities as a technology company focused on user benefit. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be at Google.”

Investors were pleased with the Q4 2012 earnings, which droves shares up 4.9 percent in extended trading. The company closed at $702.87 in NASDAQ trading today.

“In today’s multi-screen world we face tremendous opportunities as a technology company focused on user benefit,” said Page. “It’s an incredibly exciting time to be at Google.”

Google got a handle on advertising in the mobile space, which they were seriously missing out on last year. By giving away Android it allowed them to advertise on mobile devices and get back that slowing revenue from computer users. Quite smart on Google's part imho.

LOL. Tony, you are just ridiculous as always. Maybe your a little upset because Google is rising and improving with every release while Apple stagnates. On the issue of finance, you have no clue what Google's plans are or how they operate. Google's profit model is more dynamic than you give it credit for... They are one of the most profitable companies out there, so lets just leave it at that and end your useless spin right now.

Nice way to take a quote out of context. Here's a better Larry Page quote in context. When asked about how Apple's lawsuits are affecting them. "Hows that working out for ya"

Exactly, and neither do you or anyone. Google won't say how much the wonderful Android adventure is doing financially. My guess not that great, hence the cold war detente option with Apple because Google makes more money from iOS than they do from Android so their services have to be on iOS.

My answer would be pretty good actually. Apple makes vast amounts of money on iOS, Google and all the Android OEMs except Samsung don't. iOS is way ahead of Android using any real world platform metric, Apple sales are growing, what's not to like?

Google seem a bit irrelevant now in the mobile markets as they just seem to function as Samsung's free R&D OS guys, how long can that bizarre relationship hold?

The really interesting relationships in the mobile device markets are not Apple-Google or iOS-Android it's Apple-Samsung (and so far both seem to be able to grow and profit in the mobile markets and both will probably continue to do so) and Google-Samsung.

The fly in the ointment for Samsung is that their success is wholly dependent on Google and Samsung like Apple is a vertical integrator so they will be thinking about how to reduce their dependency and hence vulnerability. And so we have this:

Soooo.... I get a better phone at a better price and I care how?

Soooo.... Google has a different profit model than "the precious" and you care how?

As usual, anything that isn't positive for Apple, you dont understand and completely misinterpret everything around it. Yes, of course Apple makes buckets full of cash on IOS... The point of the comment and my point here was about the lawsuits, not Apples profits. Let me spell this out carefully one more time so you are clear.... While Apple has been concentrating on lawsuits because of its falsely perceived notion that everyone is copying it, the competition they are suing has passed them by. The competition has better phones, better UI, better hardware and better prices. Its very much like the horse and buggy company suing Ford for copying their 4 wheel design - as in the design existed prior to the horse and buggy company yet the horse and buggy company seems to think they own it.

Anyhow, how are the lawsuits working out? Well, its a whole lot of effort for zero gain. Apple would be much better served to go back and innovate and come out with better products, not sue companies that make better products. Plain and simple.

You are right. So what are the trends and patterns of that advertising in the mobile space? Here are a couple of observations.

Mobile advertising on any platform for any vendor is much lower per user compared to PC browsing and the world is moving to mobile and gently but persistently away from PCs. Android does not change this and is not the answer to the strategic issues that this trend poses fro Google.

iOS is a much better platform for generating Advertising income than Android.

Which is why Google cannot afford to abandon iOS and cannot use it's freebie offerings to differentiate and favour Android. So when Apple dropped Google from maps and discontinued the Apple YouTube app Google had to rush in with pretty good replacements. Google cannot afford to lose the mobile advertising income from iOS as it is so much more than their incoem from Android.

It's Tony. Let's recap shall we? Google revenue and growth up. Apple revenue and growth SKYROCKETING BECAUSE IT@S WHAT I WANT TO BELIEVE!!!

Back to reality... What did happen to Apple?

Oh, right... It lost 10% of its share price in a single day. Maybe when folk sell those shares before next quarter's disaster, they will be able to admit that Apple's brief surge of hyper success has drawn to a close.
