Surface Pro starts at $899

Microsoft originally told us that Surface Pro would bow in the January of this year, but it looks as though the Redmond, Washington-based company is running a bit behind schedule. Microsoft announced today that Surface Pro would actually launch on February 9 in the U.S. and Canada.
Unlike Surface RT, which runs Windows RT and lacks Windows software backwards compatibility due to its use of an ARM processor, Surface Pro can handle the entire Windows library thanks to Windows 8 Pro. The tablet packs in a Core i5 processor, 1080p display, Mini DisplayPort, and a USB 3.0 port. The tablet is also much pricier than its Surface RT counterpart, which starts at $499. The 64GB version is priced at $899 while the 128GB model will cost you $999.

Why are you angry about the price?

It's an ultrabook competitor essentially - you're paying about the same for an equivalent macbook air, or Asus Zenbook etc. but Microsoft is exceeding all of those in screen quality and probably build quality (even the MBA). Plus the digitizer and tablet functionality is great.

Pricing isn't agressive, but it certainly isn't too overpriced compared to the other options. If you disagree, post a similarly built (quality wise) laptop at the same price. Yes you can have cheaper ultrabooks, but you're sacrificing enormously in build quality, screen quality, and feedback (keyboard, etc), likely even if you were comparing to the type cover. Cheap PC keyboards suck, and Anand for one had no complaints about the type cover.

Compare and contrast with the HP ElitePad 900 --

If they're a similar price, I'd definitely lean toward the Surface Pro, given the awesome build quality presumably carried forward from the Surface RT and the fact that it's a full-fledged Core rather than an Atom.

I did have a chance to handle an ElitePad a handful of weeks ago at an HP event, however, and I must say that they managed to get the accessory jacket and dock done amazingly well. Too bad that, since it's HP, they'll likely gouge on the accessory pricing. Not that the Type Cover is any bargin, though ...

If surface had taken 100$ off, or just bundled with type/touch, it would have been amazing.

I think even the perceived value would have been so good that a 899/999/1099 models, the latter two being bundled with the cover, would have been perceived as excellent value, even though it's the exact same price.

If they had offered the SP at current prices with a keyboard though... I would have snapped one up instantly if I hadn't just replaced my computer before they announced surface.

Also, build quality is going to be hugely up compared to almost any ultrabook, including the macbook air. Screen quality should beat them all, except for maybe the IPS panel in the Asus zenbooks, but I'm still not sure.

Battery life on ultrabooks won't be super competitive until haswell, but when it hits it should be great.

While the price come out the same, some people will still be wanting for the traditional laptop (as in something that can support itself without needing a table top to rest on). The Asus Zenbook Touch gives you a 13.3" 1080p touch screen, 128GB SSD, the same amount of RAM, and the same processor more than likely.

Now I think it's up to the individual to determine which features they would prefer (personally I don't care about touchscreen laptops), but the spot on price makes me think that Microsoft isn't trying to undercut the competition, just show that windows can have as nice of tablets as iOS (with infinitely more functionality).
