The network upgrade will offer a better mobile Web experience for customers in certain rural parts of the U.S.

In an attempt to beef up its wireless Internet services for those in rural areas of the U.S., AT&T has acquired wireless assets from Atlantic Tele-Network.

Atlantic Tele-Network, which operates under the Alltel name, will acquire wireless network assets, licenses and retail stores for $780 million in cash. This includes spectrum in the 700 MHz, 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands.

In addition, AT&T will add 585,000 subscribers to its network.

With this new network upgrade, AT&T plans to offer a better mobile Web experience for customers in rural parts of Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina.

Last week, it was announced that AT&T was looking to acquire Dutch carrier KPN or UK carrier Everything Everywhere in Europe in an effort to offset slowing growth within the U.S.

AT&T lacked the spectrum to deploy decent service in these areas anyway. Just another example of how there is becoming less and less choice on the post paid market. This is why I will stick with US Cellular. It will be a cold day in hell when I pay AT&T's prices.
