Leaked slide shows impressive specifications

A slide has leaked that shows the LG Optimus G Pro smartphone, the follow-up to the Optimus G. The Optimus G Pro’s headliner feature is a new five-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

A 1.7 GHz processor said to be the Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 powers the device. The smartphone is also said to feature 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, LTE connectivity, 13MP rear camera, and a 3000 mAh battery. Other specifications that have leaked around the web claim that the smartphone will run Android Jelly Bean for the operating system and weigh in at about 160 g.

The phone features both One-Seg and NOTTV functionality that only works in Japan. We’ll no doubt see the Optimus G Pro on our shores sometimes this year, although without the TV functionality.

User-replaceable battery that does not require disassembling the phone with a screwdriver?

Upgradeable storage via MicroSD?

I know its predecessor doesn't, nor does the Nexus 4.

Regardless of how powerful & sexy it is, if id does not have these things I will not be spending $500+ on it.

The AT&T version does, the other versions do not. The AT&T version is different in size as well, it's kind of it's own device.

There are versions for Sprint and for the Korean market that don't, but the base model has a microSD slot. The no-slot variants come with 32GB internal memory though.

You know, I bought my Galaxy S III because it had an SD slot and removable battery when competing phones at the time didn't (HTC One, iPhone, etc) but I have yet to expand the storage beyond my 32GB internal or bother removing the battery for any reason...

I've rooted it and do CWM backups and sideloading from the internal NAND without a problem. Also, battery life is improved when not using SDHC, as well as performance is improved (nothing is faster than the internal memory.)

So there just isn't a benefit for most people to have removable components. The average lifetime of smartphones is <2 years, way before the battery will fail.

I've put a 32GB SDHC in my S3 and it's pretty much full.

it has my music collection and a few videos. Things I can get by without if i need to put something important on extra storage in the mSD slot.

That way I don't chew up internal storage with stuff I can live without short term.

As for the battery, there is a reason most warranties included with phones (and laptops!) exclude the battery from standard 12-24 month warranties (usually limiting the battery to 6 months) and why the battery is generally excluded from extended warranties.

Batteries tend to fail after about 12 months. And by fail I mean noticeable reduction in battery capacity. It's quite common to start noticing a slight reduction in battery life after 6 months.

By integrating a non-replaceable battery into a device, you pretty much guarantee reducing it's life to 2 years. You reduce the aftermarket possibilities of selling the phone on or handing it down to the kids.

I've never had a phone that i've used for 2 years where I haven't had to replace the battery at least once (usually around the 18 month timeframe when I've been looking for a new phone but get overwhelmed by the options and decide to wait another 6 months for the next generation).

You can't have everything, phones are a bevy of compromises. If it had everything you want it would be far thicker and then others wouldn't buy it.

The truth is the majority of users never remove batteries or storage and form factor is a big deal so that who they're building these for.

Having a removable battery and a MicroSD doesn't really make it all that thick. My SGS3 has that and it is 1/4" thick.

Nope - that is just LG trying to save some design and implementation money.

Don't get me wrong. It is a damn nice phone if you have no need for those things. It just isn't for me because I make extensive use of those features.

Your S3 has a significantly smaller battery though. Increase the battery volume by 40% and something has to give.

Ah, but if I can swap batteries, I don't need a huge battery ;)

I get your point though. I am sure a quad A15-based SoC is going to be very power hungry and a 3000mah battery is a must.

Sorry - my bad. Quad Krait not Quad Cortex A15.

One thing I did notice is the Snapdragon Kraits are somewhat harder on batteries.

My SGS3 (US) has a dual krait as opposed to my SGS3 (Intl) that has a quad Exynos (Cortex A9). The US version is about 20% harder on batteries than the quad core.

As you mentioned later, it's 18% larger, i.e. has 15 extra cubic centimeters. By comparison, that's 60% of the volume of my Note II's 3100 mAh battery, and a MicroSD card takes only 0.17 cu cm (maybe double it for total slot volume).

The price for removable batteries isn't phone size. It just makes it harder to give it top notch build quality. You can't have any of these nice glass, machined aluminum, or unibody polycarbonate cases with removable batteries.

I think Samsung has done a really good job in giving their phones a solid feed despite needing a snap-on back cover. Personally, I'll choose the functionality of microSD & removable battery over the touchy-feely of unibody anyday.

LOL. Such a narrow mind. These are supposed to be SMARTRphones. You use them for a little more than making phonecalls.

I don't call being able to move my shit from one phone to another device like a tablet or my PC unnecessary. I think it is pretty cool dropping a 2GB HD movie on my class 10 MicroSD, popping it into my Laptop or Tablet and watching it there.

I don't call having a spare charged battery on hand when the one in the phone dies unnecessary. Do you watch vids and play games on your phone? Use it to surf the web on WiFi? Use your phone as a hotspot for your laptop? You do that kind of stuff for a full day and you will be cursing LG for NOT giving you a means to swap your battery.

Currently using an SGS3 that can do all that and more. Maybe it doesn't have the horsepower of quad Cortex A15s but y'know what? It's a fucking PHONE. It does everything I said in my 1st paragraph (there really ain't that much difference between a 4.8" screen and a 5" screen). And I can swap batteries, and I can put all my portable shit on the MicroSD. Let's see this LG do that.

If LG puts my wishlist stuff on one of these phones, I will be right there at the front of the line to buy one.

I think Apple is to blame (at least partly).

Other companies see how millions have flocked to Apples phone regardless of not having the features you noted. I think part of the thought process is...if apple can make billions without providing these specific features...then the collective will gladly purchase others phones without this being an issue. Designing a replaceable battery and adding MicroSD does add costs to the product and if these companies wish to make the profits Apple is....then they will follow suit......to a fault IMO.

I think also, the idea is that most consumers will not hold on to the phone long enough to need to replace the battery and cloud storage negates the needed for massive phone storage.

It really sucks that Apple has created such a controlling/restrictive ecosystem and yet millions have flocked to drink the cool-aid. Anyone looking from the outside in, see's exactly what it is.

Creating a phone with a removable battery and SD card reader is a design challenge when there has been such a push to create the thinnest, lightest device possible. The number of users actively swapping out microSD cards or batteries is negligible. Almost all users stick in a microSD card and never remove it. In the same vein, users don't walk around with pockets full of extra batteries either.

By companies cutting the removable battery, it allows for a larger battery to be squeezed in the same space, which imho makes much more logical sense.

Yet back in the real world, phones are actually getting bigger, not smaller. Maybe your statement was valid in 2002. But not now.

Samsung does it with the paper thin backs and they are just as thin as those with a non-removable battery. It about options, even if you only need to do it once or twice over the life of the device.

Personally, I don't remove the battery often but it's nice to know I can replace it as-needed. I've had all manner of device batteries lose capacity or go bad over the years. Just getting another battery and throwing it in without having to ship the entire unit, worry about wiping data, etc. is worth something to many people.
