GM wows with new Corvette Stingray

Although many people didn't want to believe the renderings when they were unveiled by Jalopnik way back in November 2011, we all have been staring at the next generation C7 Corvette Stingray for over a year now. As we have gotten closer to today's launch of America's most famous sports car, further leaks confirmed that Jalopnik had indeed scored a major scoop and was dead-on with its design "predictions" for the 2014 Corvette Stingray.
The new vehicles won’t be mistaken for anything other than a Corvette, but some big design changes have been made. The wraparound “bubble” rear hatch has given way to a more traditional rear window/rear quarter windows arrangement. In addition, the four round taillight have been ditched in favor of a more integrated, Camaro-esque design.

“Like the ’63 Sting Ray, the best Corvettes embodied performance leadership, delivering cutting-edge technologies, breathtaking design and awe-inspiring driving experiences,” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. “The all-new Corvette goes farther than ever, thanks to today’s advancements in design, technology and engineering.”

General Motors was able to shave 99 pounds off the weigh of the vehicle through the greater use of aluminum, magnesium, and carbon fiber. The new chassis is also 57 percent stiffer than the outgoing C6 Corvette.

As we reported back in October, the new Corvette Stingray is powered by a new 6.2-liter LT1 OHV small-block V8 engine (450hp, 450 lb-ft of torque). However, in order to boost output and keep fuel efficiency in check, the new engine features direct injection, continuous variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation. The engine can be paired with two new transmission choices: a 7-speed manual with active rev matching or a 6-speed automatic (blasphemy).

General Motors is promising a better power-to-weight ratio than the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8.

The new C7 Corvette Stingray will be able to rocket to 60 mph in under 4 seconds and will exceed the 26 mpg rating of the current vehicle on the highway.

“We believe the Corvette represents the future of modern performance cars because it delivers more power, more driving excitement and better fuel efficiency,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “The result is better performance by every measure. The 2014 Corvette delivers the fastest acceleration, the most cornering grip, the most track capability, the best braking performance and what we expect to be the best fuel economy ever for a standard Corvette.”
The C7 Corvette Stingray will be available in the third quarter of 2013.

Doesn't this look a lot like a Viper ?

No, Vipers are more brute force looking, while the new Corvette looks like a supercar from the front window back. The front is still a long nose that the Corvettes have always had. I guess in the front end design the Viper is more like the Corvette.

Surely they're not the same car, the viper has a little smoother, curved lines. But the grill, headlights, swoops. Aside from the roof and rear, they're very similar.

I wouldn't say Viper, but there's definitely a more hard-edged, aggressive, styling to it. It doesn't have the softer curves of the previous generations.

To me it looks like the offspring of a Corvette and a McLaren.

The Viper is an awesome track car, but for a daily driver the Vette offers substantially better road manners and reliability. I have friends with over 100k on their C5's and NOTHING unusual has gone wrong; change fluids, tires, brakes. Obviously the 15mpg city figure isn't practical but you wouldn't want to be driving anything this fun in rush hour traffic every day anyway.

Already have a deposit on one at my local dealer. As soon as ordering opens up, my local dealer will put it through.

As for styling, I'm OK with it. The Camaro'ish back end doesn't really do it for me, but the rest looks decent. The real difference is the details. The brakes, suspension, engine, frame, and everything else is all upgraded. Nothing left over from the previous design. Can't wait to put it on a track and see what it can do in stock form. Then it's off to my tuner to make better.

As for the rest, I'm waiting for the kiddies to wake up tomorrow and start to complain about the OHV engine (again) and non-midengined design.

lol, I remember going to the track and some people with the older mustangs would tell me how my 06 was a pig and it weighed soo much more.(it really wasn't)

I easily made up for the diff since some of them drivers had at least a 150 on me! Their fat @$$es sure didn't help there cars get off the line any better

Yeah, I don't like the Camaro'ish back end either. I would have liked the split window too, but still it is a beautiful car. Not a fan of Camaros but I love Corvettes.

Would round really have looked right when the car already has so many sharp angles? I think the only way they could have pulled round tail lights off looking nice would be to make them look just like a Ferrari. And that would piss off just as many people.

I haven't heard so much whining since they got rid of the pop up lights on the C5->C6 change. The funny part is most of the people I know who b|itched and moaned about that change, said they'd never buy one. And guess what they have now?

But the four round tail lights have been present on all Corvettes since the C3, which i find ironic it the original stingray. They're easily the most recognizable feature of Corvettes, almost iconic at this point. Hard edges aren't a problem at all just look at the GT-R, pulls the look off seamlessly and doesn't look like a Ferrari.

The only look the GT-R pulls off is hideousness. Seriously, Nissan should have sold a paper bag to put over it.

The GT-R has some nice performance, is easily the easiest car to drive at the limit, but has no soul. There are some fun ugly chicks, but alas the GT-R doesn't even have a personality to go with it's bad looks.

Current Corvette's are rated at 26 mpg on the freeway but often get better. Pretty damn good for 430 horsepower.

This one is supposed to do better and I'd think it would with it being smaller and lighter, as well as the engine being a lower displacement.

Sure, lets speculate. I bet you're an American car hater who lives above Mommy's flat in some European slum. See, I can do it to.

Or you can go to facts. The C6 is competitive with most sports cars in the world. The ZR1 and Z06 Carbon set records at "The Ring" that haven't been broken by ANY factory Ferrari or Lamborghini. And they do so at a price point that is 3-5X less.

The current C6 Corvette is far from perfect, particularly the interior, but nothing can touch it at it's price point.

And "looks like a gas guzzler", LOL. Expected to get 30mpg on highway and 26mpg combined.

Can't understate the price part of your argument. Ferrari, Lambo's, those are nice, if you're a blue-blood or a doctor.

Corvette's offer the same performance, with very minor sacrifices, in a package affordable to the masses.

While I agree with the sentiment, "affordable to the masses" is a very relative term for vechile that will probably start at $45k and realistically move up from there as fast as the car itself.

Try more like 90k. But damn what a beautiful car. I would love one and can afford one but my wife hates Corvettes and I would have to do a lot of convincing and bribing. Not ready for all of that yet, especially since my current sports ride is less than 2 yo. Maybe next year...

90k for a corvette? Maybe for a Z06 performance model. The base 2012 Corvette starts at $49,600. Expect this car to cost more, but I would guess more like $55K with more standard equipment than the old car had. This thing has a carbon fiber hood, aluminum chassis, and a fully wrapped interior (no stamped plastic showing) so getting that price point is amazing.

MSRP is low 50's. Expected to be $50,495 for the base model with no options. With options, expect close to $60K, but then after the furvor dies down, you should be able to get a fully optioned base model for right around $50K.

Future high performance models will cost signifigantly more. I've already seen a version of the supercharged LT1. I highly doubt you'll see a larger displacement LT1 like we did with the LS7, at least not anytime soon.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Camaro's tail lights, so hopefully the vette improves on that design. Also, I feel like the A pillars should be body colored.

Otherwise, I love the update. Puts it more in the Euro arena style-wise. Can't wait for benchmarks! :p

front end is beautiful, better than an f12 or 599 imho;
sides look like they tried to fit a nissan GT-R roof over the cabin, looks kinda weird;
rear end looks too much like a C6 with a camaro bodykit

looks great, finally worthy of a sports car. let's hope the materials are not of the same standard as in the C6

The angle of the vent on the side is what I don't like. The shape of the car is great but that side vent is bothering me. I think it needs to be more upright.

Considering that the regular car has a removable roof already the weight gain to a full convertible is pretty small, if not less because glass weighs more than canvas. The handling compromise is nothing because the regular car already lacks a fixed roof.

But the B & C wont be there in a convertible. There will be some loss to the structural stiffness but cant imagine there would be much. Glass does weigh more, but the mechanism for the top adds weight so I imagine it will be a wash. Then again if you're getting a convertible, performance isn't your top goal either.

The removable roof in the current C5 and C6 gens isn't glass, it's acrylic. Very light.

For your argument, I'd go to the current cars. The convertible does hold a bit of a weight penalty, but it's not much. I expect that difference not to change that much for the new model.

Sorry, should have been more clear. I wasnt talking about the roof panels. I was referring to the weight of the back glass. Yeah, I don't think there will be much of a weight penalty. Considering the frame is significantly stiffer in this iteration than the previous version, I don't see a lot of reinforcement needed for the lack of b/c pillars.

If you look at other cars, as the newer models come out, the convertible versions have had lower and lower structural and weight penalties. This car it will be even less so.

Like I said though, if you are getting a convertible, then performance isn't your only goal.

thanks. while I like manuals. 7 speeds seems like a lot of rowing. unless 7 is super tall for highways only.

I agree, but if you're a fast shifter then more gears would allow for a smaller engine and getting more out of it. It seems auto manufacturers settled upon "5" as the magic number for manuals. I'd be happy to have a 2010 or newer Mustang. The 2013's sure are sweet. Anyone who tries to insult a new model Mustang has never driven one 0-60 in under five seconds. *A good driver can beat five seconds if the car is rated at 0-60 in five. I've done it in a 2010 GT, and the new V6's power like a slightly older V8.

2011 and up are 6spd, the 2010 is a 5spd/4.6L3V but with the refreshed body style.

No one is insulting Mustangs here bc the topic is the new Corvette so why even make that statement?

I'm sure you can beat 5 secs in a 2010 if you're running at least 3.73s.

Anyways, try to be more like Porkins (RIP) and stay on target. We're talking about the Corvette here.

Seriously, though, that is one of the most driver orientated interiors I've seen in a long time. It's almost like the passenger side is tacked on, unimportant. I am fine with this.

I've thought they've been fairly hideous since the end of the 1982 / C3 model, so its a matter of opinion but I think it's a huge move in the right direction, back to its heritage.

Beautiful design, very aggressive and I completely dig the cockpit feel they gave the driver in the interior but it looks like they stopped designing the car at the steering wheel????? what is this?? what is that BLOB at the center of the wheel?! 0_0
