The attacks were described as highly sophisticated and not the work of amateurs

Recently hackers attacked multiple banks within America causing the online banking sites to slow or even crash before recovering shortly after. The New York Times reports that the disturbing thing about the rash of bank attacks was that rather than exploiting individual machines, attackers engineered networks of computers in data centers to carry out the attack.

According to officials in the U.S. this sort of attack requires significant skills and the skill needed has convinced some U.S. government officials and security researchers that the attacks were the work of Iran. The officials believe that the bank attacks were likely retaliation for economic sanctions put in place by the United States.

“There is no doubt within the U.S. government that Iran is behind these attacks,” said James A. Lewis, a former official in the State and Commerce Departments and a computer security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

There has been no proof offered by American officials that Iran is the source of the attacks. However, the officials say that one key sign that the attacks were state-sponsored comes in the fact that the hackers were simply out to disrupt, not to try to steal money.

“The scale, the scope and the effectiveness of these attacks have been unprecedented,” said Carl Herberger, vice president of security solutions at Radware.

So far the online websites of major banks including Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bancorp, PNC, Capital One, Fifth Third Bank, BB&T and HSBC have been attacked. The attackers used DDoS techniques to deny service by sending large volume of traffic to a site until the sites crashed.
The officials in the U.S. are quick to point out, however, that no bank accounts were breached and no money was taken in the attacks.

I honestly don't get what why there is such a big focus on Iran. I mean, N. Korea already has a nuclear arsenal, near functional ICBM's, and a recently launched "communications" satellite.

I guess the lobby in government forces us to concentrate on Iran even though they are little threat to us. NK is, though.

Chances are Iran is paying us back for attacking their nuclear facilities. We hack their nuclear sites, they send DDoS attacks against our banks.

BTW, because many of our industrial switches are vulnerable, Iran could easily wreak havoc here. It appears the USA's hacking attacks have opened a can of worms. What's worse, the USA's attacks did not do much damage in Iran. Because the USA is the largest and most developed economy, it naturally has the largest number of targets. Perhaps, in retrospect, attempting to hack into Iran's sites was not wise after all.

Actually i think Iran wants the pay back the US for years of terror by the Shah that was put in power by overthrowing the legitimate Iranian government with terror booming planed by the CIA and MI6, with Operation AJAX!

Just because the then sitting government wanted to nullify the oil contracts, that where drafted when Iran was still a colony of "Great *cugh* Britannia", and where very favorable for Britain.

Operation AJAX was also the reason the students occupied the US embassy, because they ware afraid the US would interfere and put the Shah back in power.

In the end everyone lost in the long run!

- The Iranians because of the loss of a pro westerns government.
- The region because of destabilization
- The west because even do most in the west don't know the history, everyone in the region dose know, and hate's the west for it.

The same go's for a lot of bana-republics in middle America, ware legitimate ware overthrow, because the "American fruit company" had corrupt government sanctioned contracts, and the CIA just made up a bunch of lies, and helped overthrow those legitimate voted in governments, just to make some rich basters even richer. >_<

Not that my country has clean hands, Holland dit some horrific things in the war against Indonesian freedom fighters, including wiping out whole villages.

Same go's for the Britannia, Belgium Portugal and Spain, even do not on the level of the US after WWII, before WWII we all dit verry bad things, with one exception France, ware colonial citizens ware treated equal to France citizens.

But in the end is it so strange that half the word hates the West, even do most of the people in the West never learned this inconvenient history, or just turned a blind eye to it, local people do know it, and often still feel the consequences of it, and they hate us for it, and can you really blame them for it!
