The Pantech Discover is a 4G full-featured Android phone

Pantech is releasing a new, full-featured Android smartphone for only $50 through AT&T this month.

The new smartphone is the Pantech Discover, and it is a 4G phone for only $49.99 with a two-year contract through AT&T.

The Pantech Discover features 4.8-inch HD display with 1280x720 resolution, a 12.6 MP camera, 1080p HD video recording and playback, dual 3D surround sound speakers, near-field communication (NFC), 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 16 GB on-board memory and Easy Experience/Standard Experience modes depending on the user.

It also offers AT&T's new DriveMode app, which stops drivers from using their device while driving. When the car accelerates beyond 25 MPH, the DriveMode app automatically replies to text messages with a response that lets them know you're driving. All calls are forwarded to voicemail, with the exception of those specified in your "allow" list.

"The Pantech Discover combines a feature-packed experience - complete with a 12.6-megapixel camera and HD display - with a cost-effective price point, giving AT&T customers yet another strong option in our 4G LTE portfolio," said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president- Devices, AT&T. "AT&T is dedicated to educating customers about the dangers of texting while driving and providing real solutions to help prevent the behavior. With DriveMode pre-loaded on the Discover, we hope that users will be less likely to text and drive."

AT&T recently upped its sales target to 26 million smartphones for all of 2012. This is an increase of one million from previous estimates. AT&T notes that it sold 6.4 million smartphones in the first two months of Q4 2012.

The Pantech Discover will be available January 11.

I know everyone rags on AT&T, but are they really THAT bad? I've been using them since 2009, and they've been pretty reliable so far. I get LTE coverage in my home area (around 20-30Mbps down/15 Mbps up) and dropped calls have pretty much disappeared since 2010.

I know people have complaints with their customer service, but I never have to call in for anything...

I have been a Verizon customer since they were bell atlantic mobile (was actually an employee of the wireless division through the company roll over). So I can't speak to the quality of AT&Ts network as a customer. However every time I ever call an AT&T customer, my audio gets tin canned. I have no idea why it happens, but it only happens when calling AT&T customers from my Verizon phone. Verizon to landline sounds fine, verizon to verizon sounds fine. Don't know anyone specifically with TMobile or sprint to test with, but all the AT&T friends I have, the call instantly sounds like crap when it connects, even when its ringing. I can't even be sure it is an AT&T problem.

I know people that have issues with Verizon.

Really doesn't matter who you have, there is someone to complain about them. Here in the Northeast where I am currently, AT&T coverage could be better, but out in CA and other areas that I have been to Verizon coverage could be better.
