I am running my entire media collection off of a $35 raspberry pi hooked up to my TV. I do have a 16TB server actually providing the content, but after years of streaming media via the xbox media center app, I wanted to find something different. The app worked, but not well, and it required me to have my main computer on for the xbox to connect to, since the home server where my data is doesn't have media center.
So with the pi, I was able to take my PC out of the loop, and have everything stream direct from my server to my TV. Interface is a little slower than I would like, but the software is a beta, and I think the pi will get more powerful in a few revisions. The playback is flawless, it is only the main UI navigation that can be a little slow. That was taken care of by using Yatse for android (a remote xbmc control app) so all browsing is done with a synced copy of my library on my phone, and then I just play what I want from the phone, so I experience no lag with this new setup. Best 35 bucks I ever spent.

I made a Openelec Raspberry Pi for my mom to access my library (we both have 100Mbps fiber). It works so extremely well I really can't believe it.
It can even stream a 25GB 1080P files without a problem, although it takes about 5 seconds to start playing with that large files. Everything else is just instant.
I agree with you on the interface, but I hope that it's something that will be fixed before the final version.

Streaming access for your mom... Didn't you mean to say 100Mbps ethernet from your room in the basement to upstairs?
