New specification promises 10 Gbps

We don’t think that many people were complaining about the existing speeds delivered by USB 3.0, but performance about to get even better. The USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced this week at CES that some tweaks have been made to the USB 3.0 protocol that will allow it to be even faster. Currently, USB 3.0 ports are capable of transfer speeds up to a theoretical 5 Gbps.

The new specification will allow the ports to transfer data at twice that speed promising up to 10 Gbps of data throughput. The promoter group expects the supplement to the USB 3.0 specification to be completed by the middle of the year, which should mean devices supporting the higher-speed will be available then as well.

The higher rate USB 3.0 ports will be compatible with existing cables and connectors. The new specification will provide improved data encoding for more efficient data transfer and will offer improved I/O power efficiency. The faster specification will be compatible with existing USB 3.0 software stacks and device class protocols. The new protocol will also be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports and products.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group says that the faster USB 3.0 port is targeted for industry review during Q1 of this year. More information regarding the specifications in planned for release will be available later.

Will current motherboards be able to support the higher speed via a firmware update? Or will we need new boards + new devices?

It sounds like a pure software change. Assuming, there is decent support for your device, if there might be a possibility...

But of course most manufacturers will be greedy and charge for a firmware update...probably because engineers are expensive.

Motherboard manufacturers don't charge for firmware or BIOS updates... Once you purchase hardware, the support is up to them. Since the new USB 3.0 speeds were not part of that hardware, I seriously doubt if any firmware update would be released for anything other than newer motherboards sold in 2013.


So why not call this USB 4.0 or 3.1?

These are the same people who brought you USB Hi Speed vs USB Full Speed for USB 1.1 vs 2.0 (I still don't know which is which). BTW Shane did you a favor and left out that they're calling this USB Super Speed. I guess the next one will be Super-duper speed?

The industry would be better off if the marketer(s) thinking up these useless names were taken out and shot. Just call them 12 Mbps, 480 Mbps, 4 Gbps, and now 10 Gbps.

Personally I like the 10gbps idea but its going to cause some confusion. I have a pc motherboard with thunderbolt and I'm not using the thunderbolt port because its so expensive for the cables/adapters but it would be cheaper to buy a thunderbolt adapter than change the motherboard to get 10gbps. or if super speed usb3.0+ has cheap pci-e cards. Is pci-e 3.0 faster on 1x slots? Pci-e 2.0 1x is 200MBps 1 direction?

It you have the typical Thunderbolt implementation you have two 10 Gbps channels in parallel for a theoretical maximum of 20 Gbps, full duplex. (There are some single channel implementations out there that only support 10 Gbps, full duplex.)

Thunderbolt is essentially a PCIe extension in an external, wired form.

The 1x (single lane) PCIe 2.0 is 500 MB/s (4 Gbps). PCIe 3.0 is 985 MB/s (7.88 Gbps). PCIe 4.0 (when it finally shows up) is expected to be be 1,969 MB/s (15.75 Gbps).

Absolutely not. Once the specification is complete, fabs have to build test chips, then pre-production chips, then vendors design and build hardware in parallel with full production chips. Don't expect hardware/systems supporting 10 Gbps USB before 2014, and maybe not until late 2014.

Compatible with does not mean the same as people will be able to run 10 Gbps over the old USB 3.0 cables designed to support 5.0 Gbps. The USB committee is telling people that you *MAY* be able to get 10 Gbps over those old cables, but don't count on it.

You can certainly count on the new 10 Gbps USB implementation to be backward compatible with the 5 Gbps and 480 Mbps implementations. But don't count on any of your current hardware being "forward" compatible. It might, but don't count on it.

Why don't they fix the USB 3.0 reliability issues first?
sick of the constant drop outs.
plug same device into usb 2.0 port and it works perfect.
