It's hoping to reach more U.S. customers

Huawei is now selling its Ascend P1 smartphone through Amazon in an attempt to attract customers from the U.S. to its products.

Huawei is a Chinese telecommunications maker that has made little headway as far as sales go in the United States, but through the use of Amazon, the company is looking to reach this audience.

The Ascend P1 is an Android-powered smartphone with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, an 8 MP camera and 1 GB of RAM. It's also very slim at 7.6 millimeters.



“The Ascend P1 is perfect for consumers looking to get the most out of their device,” said Michael Chuang, Executive Vice President of Huawei Device USA. “Whether it’s for playing games, streaming music and videos, or sharing multimedia in the home or workplace, the Ascend P1 offers unparalleled performance and a truly unique mobile experience.”

Huawei hopes to compete with other Android-powered devices like those made by Samsung. Android is the most popular smartphone operating system in the U.S., followed by iOS.

The Ascend P1 is available unlocked for $449.99 on Amazon.

Earlier this week, Huawei found itself in hot water when it allegedly offered a bid to sell €1.3M ($1.7 million USD) worth of equipment to Mobile Telecommunication Comp. of Iran (MCI). Huawei and other Chinese telecommunication firms are contractually forbidden from reselling electronics from U.S. companies to Iran, and doing so could hurt their relationship with U.S. OEMs. Huawei denied ever producing the document, and instead blamed one of its major local partners, Skycom Tech Co Ltd.

For selling an Android phone unlocked and off contract, it means they are in direct competition with the Nexus 4.
For this price vs the price of the Nexus 4, why would anyone get this phone? Lower specs, higher price, no guarantee of OS upgrade path. Unless of course, they don't want or can't afford to wait for the Nexus 4 to come back in stock at Google.

but what does it have that the nexus phone doesn't that makes it more useful that's worthy of that price difference?

Well the price difference isn't very fair because google is intentionally selling very near cost. Other manufactures can't do that cause they don't also sell content.
Besides that, differences in price may be attributed to a more pleasing UI, better camera, better build, better radio performance, better built-in speakers, nicer screen (not necessarily just resolution, but contrast ratio/viewing angles/refresh rate).
I'm in no way advocating the purchase of huawai phones, but I think you're being somewhat short-sighted.

it doesn't matter if the price is fair or not, as the end customer that do not care about brand names could care less. Why do you think most companies try to lower costs and increase efficiency? Especially with Huawai right now, trying to break into the NA market. They need to sell pretty much at cost right now, to not only compete with the Nexus 4, but also to gain brand recognition and market share.

As far as your other non-spec sheet arguments go, pretty much only the radio performance and build quality can't be reflected on the spec sheet, as all others can be pretty much approximated just from looking at the materials used. And a company, if using something that is a lot better than what other companies are doing, will make sure they advertise that as well.

They ARE in the NA market, just not very big. They are currently on T-MO and Metro.
