It's hoping to reach more U.S. customers

Huawei is now selling its Ascend P1 smartphone through Amazon in an attempt to attract customers from the U.S. to its products.

Huawei is a Chinese telecommunications maker that has made little headway as far as sales go in the United States, but through the use of Amazon, the company is looking to reach this audience.

The Ascend P1 is an Android-powered smartphone with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, an 8 MP camera and 1 GB of RAM. It's also very slim at 7.6 millimeters.



“The Ascend P1 is perfect for consumers looking to get the most out of their device,” said Michael Chuang, Executive Vice President of Huawei Device USA. “Whether it’s for playing games, streaming music and videos, or sharing multimedia in the home or workplace, the Ascend P1 offers unparalleled performance and a truly unique mobile experience.”

Huawei hopes to compete with other Android-powered devices like those made by Samsung. Android is the most popular smartphone operating system in the U.S., followed by iOS.

The Ascend P1 is available unlocked for $449.99 on Amazon.

Earlier this week, Huawei found itself in hot water when it allegedly offered a bid to sell €1.3M ($1.7 million USD) worth of equipment to Mobile Telecommunication Comp. of Iran (MCI). Huawei and other Chinese telecommunication firms are contractually forbidden from reselling electronics from U.S. companies to Iran, and doing so could hurt their relationship with U.S. OEMs. Huawei denied ever producing the document, and instead blamed one of its major local partners, Skycom Tech Co Ltd.

tough sell

a quick amazon search shows unlocked galaxy SII phones going for between $370 and $420. the SII x is listed at 399, and that has a 4.5" AMOLED plus screen, a 1.5GHz duallie chip, an 8MP camera, NFC... who would buy a non-name chinese phone over that?

Huawei may not have much brand recognition in the USA... Doesn't make them small and cheap however and they are making some good strides in other market segments in other countries.

They usually build high-end equipment for telecommunication companies, stuff like DSLAM's, network infrastructure, those little 3G modems you buy from your providers... etc.

Still, like anything, wait for the reviews. :)

No matter how quality Huawei is the only thing that matters is public opinion and until they change the opinion of their brand people are going to want them to be the low cost option.

If they reduced their price to get a foothold into the market, then a few good reviews and recommendations they can sell at the Samsung price levels. They won't be able to start that way.

i didn't say they were small or cheap, i said they were non-name, and compared to companies like samsung they are. they sell lots of phones in germany for example, but how many americans have ever heard of them before?

Um, pretty sure they are on Metro, so quite a few. T-mobile sells them as well. Just because YOU haven't heard of them, doesn't mean others haven't.

My wife has a huawei and she is in love with it, amazing phone that America is missing out on and an absolutely amazing price, the p1 is going for under £200 and is worth every penny.

Screen size? depends on the user
Processor speed? I bet your phone is idling 98% of the time.
8mp camera? Small sensor size with the red center issue.
NFC? I have NFC on my phone but have never used it.

High end android phones are basically the same, just different bodies and brand names.

Why would someone consider an almost 2 year old phone for around $400? Now that is crazy.

The new Nexus 4 which is very, very close to a GS3 can be had for $300-$350. Hopefully they will back in stock soon!
