Corning will show off stronger glass for tablets and smartphones

Corning first repurposed its 1960s high-strength, sheet glass technology into “Gorilla Glass” for the original Apple iPhone in 2007. Since that time, Gorilla Glass has gone on to become one of the most popular ruggedized glass substrates used on tablets and smartphones.

Corning has announced that it will be unveiling Gorilla Glass 3 which promises a new composition with enhanced durability.

“These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity,” said Wendell P. Weeks, chairman, chief executive officer, and president at Corning.

Corning says that it would be discussing the new orderable Gorilla Glass 3 product and offering hourly demonstrations on the new material.

Corning announced Gorilla Glass 2 at CES 2012, so there should be no surprise at what Corning will announce at CES 2014…

I read on another site earlier today that the main improvement over GG2 is 3x better scratch resistance.

GG1 - great
GG2 - 20% thinner, same strengh and scratch resistance
GG3 - 3x better scratch resistance

That would pretty much eliminate having to use these wretched screen protectors. I like it.

I don't use screen protectors and I haven't had any scratch yet, I'll still buy one cause my fingers don't glide as good on a clean screen as they do on one with the protector.

My SG III was scratched on the way home from the store before I could even get the protector on. My old SG didn't have that issue.

How did it get scratched so quickly. I've had my phone for over a year and it is pristine.

Its always a relief to get the first scratch, then you don't need to worry about keeping your phone/camera/game/small electronic "pristine".

I've had my SG III for over 6 months without a screen protector and I do have just a tiny hint of a scratch on the screen. I'm almost certain it's because I put the phone in the same pocket as my keys by mistake. But I agree it's not as scratch resistant as the original gorilla glass. My Motorola Droid 1 was an absolute tank -- i never took any special care of it and the screen was pristine for the 2 years I carried it around.

I believe you are incorrect about GG2. It is indeed thinner, but not quite as break resistant as the original GG1. Hopefully GG3 combines the best of both worlds.

You may be right... I read the press release back when GG2 came out and they said it was the same but 20% thinner... But that was a press release.

A problem I have with plastic screen protectors is this: they generally cause the screen reflectivity to change and fingerprint protection is lost(oleophobic coatings), meaning they degrade the screen by quite a bit just by applying them. Furthermore, the tendency for a screen to scratch is determined by the material hardness - and since plastic is MUCH softer than glass, protective films pick up many more scratches than an unprotected screen would.

The best part about this is that people have a habit of keeping these things on much longer than is suitable - meaning that they effectively exchange having a very beautiful screen for a scratch-prone, poorer-opacity, fingerprint-collecting protective film that they can peel off by the time they get their next phone upgrade to leave it with a pristine glass for the safe to look at (or wherever they end up. So effectively for most modern phones, screen protectors end up doing exactly what you intend on preventing...

Homo sapiens are interesting aren't they?

Just skip to synthetic sapphire and be done with it...

A watch I bought a couple of years back has a synthetic sapphire front surface instead of glass or quartz. I've smashed this watch (unintentionally, of course) against concrete walls, metal railings, rocks, tree bark, you name it -- still not a scratch on it...

If the industry could standardize on screen size and thickness, I can imagine manufacturers just building a set of sapphire screen surfaces, and then simply re-polishing and recycling them from one generation of the device to the next (which would, over time, help amortize the relatively higher cost of synthetic sapphire...)

Not a material scientist, but synthetic sapphire is hard and scratch-resistant, but more brittle compared to gorilla glass. (see the ~45 degree bend video demonstrations for gorilla glass - don't have the link here). Anyhow, it won't completely solve the problem.

You are correct, sapphire is considered fairly brittle. Theoreticaly, the only things that can scratch it are diamond and other sapphires, but that's potentially pointless if it cracks the first time it's smashed against a door handle or falls to the floor,

And remember, watch crystals are only about 38 - 46mm across and are often 2-3mm thick. For a phone, we'd be talking about a much broader unsupported sheet of potentially thinner crystal, neither of which are good for impact resistance. We've got phones that're approaching 7-8mm, we can't have the glass surface be half of that...
