One Microsoft Store expects the tablet Jan 26

The Microsoft Surface RT tablet has been on the market for a few months, and so far hasn't put up big sales numbers. While Surface RT is aimed at consumers and isn’t backwards compatible with the colossal Windows application library, Microsoft will also be launching the Surface Pro tablet which runs the more business-friendly Windows 8 operating system.

There've been plenty of hints dropped by Microsoft on when people interested in the Surface Pro will be able to buy the tablet, but nothing firm. As close as Microsoft has come to a firm launch date has been the month of January. With January here many businesses are wondering when specifically they can get their hands on the tablet.

While a specific launch date remains unannounced, CNET reports that calls to a number of Microsoft Stores have come up with a consensus of January 26. January 26 would be roughly 90 days after the launch of the Surface RT tablet, which would go along with other rumors for the tablet’s launch.

We already know that the Surface Pro tablet will be far from cheap with the 64 GB version selling for $899 and 128 GB version selling for $999. The tablet uses an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, has a 10.6-inch screen with full HD resolution, and has a Mini DisplayPort for an external monitor.

they should have launched win 8 with this - it would have flown off the shelves.

only issue is when will it be in stock in the uk and how much of a crazy markup there is on the price

(as an example the lenovo yoga 13 is $999 in the us and £999 ($1623.67) in the uk)

You have to remember that the US price is without any associated sales tax and the UK price is after 20% VAT. $999 x 1.2 = $1198.80 if the US price had 20% VAT.

But obviously still a large markup.

Is there anything good about living in the UK? I mean, 20% VAT?! Get out of there!

Universal health care comes to mind. One trip to the hospital in the US without insurance and you could be paying 20% of your yearly salary to be treated.

Now that the Affordable Care Act isn't going to be replaced every American will have health insurance even if they don't want it.

I guess in the UK you still don't have to pay the monthly bills, but then I'm pretty sure your other taxes are higher as well.

Completely wrong. Over-hyped sensationalism.

Show up to any US hospital with a medical problem. They ask for your insurance. Tell them you don't have any. Their response.......OK, here's a form to fill out.

Basically, you get most medical services for free or for pennies on the dollar, providing you don't make a significant salary and could basically afford it.

Now, that subsidized cost is passed onto everyone else by artificially increasing base medical rates to cover charity cases.

In Sweden where i live, it is 25% VAT, so 20% is "cheap" in that case.

for those 25% we get health care, 480 days parental leave per child (paid, based on income and can be shared between both parents) and lots of other things, so i don´t complain.
But, sure, you do sometimes get anvy when you see the cheap prices in the states or in other countries.

Don't forget import duty. Everybody always forgets about that in their dollar to pound conversions.

Oh and exchange rate fluctuation has to be built in among other things.

If Microsoft really believed that it would have flown off the shelves, they WOULD have launched with this.

So true -- Microsoft used WinRT (which is essentially a heavily compromised version of Win8) running on some rather lackluster ARM hardware to showcase its new UI. Whoever planned that move needs to be canned. And why in the world would they not allow you to natively switch the new user interface off if you don't have a touch screen? MS definitely flubbed this one. It may take a service pack 1 that fixes the lack of cohesiveness and allows a UI switch to get this operating system ready for mass appeal.

I'm still prepared to buy the Surface Pro though.

People aren't racing to buy Windows 8. It is being adopted slower than Windows Vista, and that's when Win8 is almost being given away.

I ran various Windows 8 versions on another machine for almost a year and now that its out, I'm sticking with Windows 7 on my main desktop. Again, I don't see how the Surface Pro would be a hit, not in the state that Windows is in.

Perhaps it'll be right when Windows 9 (or Blue, whatever they call it) is running on Broadwell or Skylake.
