5-inch HD screens, quad-core processors, 2 GB of DRAM -- these phones don't want for much

The super-phone is a term that began to be bandied about last year.  While somewhat impractical -- few apps can truly fully leverage the processing power these devices pack -- the notion of having the power of a desktop of a few years back in a device you hold in your palm is undeniably cool.  And those 5-inch displays sure do look gorgeous.

While most of the major Android and Windows Phone OEMs have announced or are planning such high-end flagship models for 2013, one of the sleeker entrants is Sony Corp.'s (TYO:6758Android "Yuga" and "Odin" super-phones, which broke cover last night, due to a possibly accidental auto-post to a Sony website.

The devices are expected to pack a 5-inch 1080p (1920x1080 pixel) S-LCD display, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor from Qualcomm, Inc. (QCOM), 2 GB of DRAM, a 13 megapixel Exmor RS imaging sensor on the rear, and an Adreno 320 GPU.

The Xperia Z (Yuga) is expected to be a slightly bulkier build and may ship first or sell at a lower price point.  The Xperia ZL (Odin) is a sleeker build packing identical hardware.  The front-facing imaging sensor (for video-chats, self-portraits, etc.) is position in the standard location with Yuga, but is shuffled down to the bottom-right corner (rather unusual) with Odin.

The pair of super-phones is expected to get official at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas, Nevada, and by the looks of it they may help launch the OEM whose sleek designs once inspired Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) iconic iPhone design to return to a leading role in an industry where it has struggled in more recent years.

How is it possible...

...that Sony hasn't yet had a "WOW!" phone? Sony has always been *the* electronics company to wow the public with devices that looked beautiful and were high-end. But for some reason they have no had a winning smartphone. And the ones they have put out here in the US, the Ion and TL, are pretty much junk.

I personally like look and feel of recent Xpertias. They don't seem to have much inside to differentiate them from other Android phones from the same classes, but they do look nice much as I am concerned.

They could become that again if they shifted their focus from developing new increasingly painful and asinine DRM concepts to innovating in design.

See the current Sony patent app for rfid disc tagging to put the hatchet down on the neck of used game sales, in regards to the above.
