5-inch HD screens, quad-core processors, 2 GB of DRAM -- these phones don't want for much

The super-phone is a term that began to be bandied about last year.  While somewhat impractical -- few apps can truly fully leverage the processing power these devices pack -- the notion of having the power of a desktop of a few years back in a device you hold in your palm is undeniably cool.  And those 5-inch displays sure do look gorgeous.

While most of the major Android and Windows Phone OEMs have announced or are planning such high-end flagship models for 2013, one of the sleeker entrants is Sony Corp.'s (TYO:6758Android "Yuga" and "Odin" super-phones, which broke cover last night, due to a possibly accidental auto-post to a Sony website.

The devices are expected to pack a 5-inch 1080p (1920x1080 pixel) S-LCD display, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor from Qualcomm, Inc. (QCOM), 2 GB of DRAM, a 13 megapixel Exmor RS imaging sensor on the rear, and an Adreno 320 GPU.

The Xperia Z (Yuga) is expected to be a slightly bulkier build and may ship first or sell at a lower price point.  The Xperia ZL (Odin) is a sleeker build packing identical hardware.  The front-facing imaging sensor (for video-chats, self-portraits, etc.) is position in the standard location with Yuga, but is shuffled down to the bottom-right corner (rather unusual) with Odin.

The pair of super-phones is expected to get official at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas, Nevada, and by the looks of it they may help launch the OEM whose sleek designs once inspired Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) iconic iPhone design to return to a leading role in an industry where it has struggled in more recent years.

sony is just circling the great toilet bowl of business before it goes down.....

what were they thinking you asked?

they were thinking that its still the early nineties and that everybody will pay more to have something worse with a sony badge.

People still do that for Apple devices, so you can hardly blame Sony for still thinking that way.

They simply haven't gotten the memo that they're out as far as being that kind of brand any longer in the eyes of the mob known as the consumers. The mob is fickle, and once you're out it's over fast.

That being said Apple's time in the sun won't be infinite either.
