Samsung teases new TV and more ahead of CES

Samsung has been showing off some of the new products that will be on display at CES 2013 early next month. The new products include new Smart TVs and a new version of the ChatOn app. ChatOn is a cross-platform messaging application that has been turned into a social media network with version 2.0.

ChatOn 2.0 is available in over 200 countries and 60 different languages. Samsung describes the service as a micro social networking platform allowing users to create profiles and post status updates that friends can comment on. The new version of the application is easier-to-use with improved ability to leave comments and add content such as photos or video.


Photos or video can be placed in "the trunk" on ChatOn before being shared on other social networks such as Facebook. The app also has a multi-screen feature allowing chatting with up to five connected devices on a single account. Users can invite friends to conversations using the app from different platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Another new product Samsung is showing off is the Smart Hub updated home screen. The new Smart Hub allows users to watch live programming and movies while using apps and looking at personal photos. Samsung is also promising that the Smart Hub will offer a “more intuitive experience with various contents, live TV broadcasts, VOD, apps, Internet and such.”

Samsung is also expected to show off a flexible smartphone screen at CES 2013.

Are you being funny? Of course you can get better battery life.

The DROID RAZR MAXX HD has a 3300mAh battery. Add 2mm in thickness for 11mm total, and you could easily reach 5000mAh in a 4.7" (or larger) phone. It's just not a priority whatsoever for manufacturers because there hasn't been a strong enough push for battery life by consumers. To my knowledge, the MAXX has only been available on Verizon in the USA, and not at all internationally.

As for the increase in CPU speed and screen size/DPI, every phone of every generation has these increases, and we're now past the point of diminishing returns for nearly all of them.
-The GS2 is still fast enough for browsing and casual multitasking.
-An 8MP camera is enough for 95% of casual users.
-DPI increases can't be seen by the human eye past a certain point.

The specs that HAVEN'T reached their potential and still need to increase:
-Bezel thickness. Droid Razr M has a 7.3mm bezel. Could be lower with Samsung's unbreakable screen technology. Imagine a phone almost identical in size to an iPhone 5, but with roughly double the screen area.
-Battery life. Look at the phone battery benchmarks on Anandtech. So-called top-of-the-line phones last 4-6 hours doing a web-browsing benchmark. This figure should at least double. Ideally it should reach 16 hours, that way you are just about guaranteed that no matter what you are doing with your phone (every option and radio enabled, 100% brightness, idling on Skype) you will at least last through the day, with 8 hours to recharge at night time.

Ok, maybe I should've been more clear when I mentioned battery life. Keeping form factor in mind, you can't work miracles with physical sizes, sure they can make it have a much bigger battery but that would make it a thicker/heavier phone. The A15 is more efficient, hence, with the same form factor, the battery life will improve a little, I'm not expecting anything ridiculous.

You seen to agree with me as well, as you trail off on your last point:

DPI increases not being seen with the human eye has been a myth, debunked over and over time and time again.
Go and enjoy your 55" 720p tv(while "not being able to see a difference" to 1080p), while I use my 27" 1440p monitor for productivity.

Not sure what you mean by I agree with you or trailer off. Yes we need better battery life, but it could easily be solved right now, today, by putting a bigger battery in the phone.

Do you really think 11mm thickness is excessive, for a capacity of 5000mAh? That's 2.38x the SGS3. Each mm can add about 850mAh of capacity, starting with the golden standard of 9mm/3300mAh, so take your pick.

As for A15 being more efficient, that's true but irrelevant. There is a TDP limitation for phones, dunno what it is, 1W or something. Expect manufacturers to saturate it.

Increased resolution does increase productivity and I would like to see higher DPI in general, but I think there's a huge opportunity to attack bezel size and battery life first.

It depends on distance from the screen but there is a point of deminishing returns with pixel density.

The S3 has 306 PPI, the iPhone 5 is 326, and the new HTC DNA is 441 PPI (and 1080p) but the reviews mostly say the extra resolution comes with the price of crappy battery life and lower gaming framerates.

Not that anything over the touted 320 "retina" standard for phones is useless but the 440 PPI on the DNA is probably too much too soon. Props to them for pushing 1080p on a 5" screen though.

We may not be at a point where more screen resolution is pointless but it certainly isn't far away. Since the screen is the biggest drain on the battery maybe after the PPI war is over battery life will start to improve.
