Wireless charging standard seems right at home in the vehicle setting

Some ideas make so much sense that it's amazing it took so long for someone to think of them. Such is the case with Toyota Motor Corp.'s (TYO:7203) installation of the Qi wireless charging system in its 2013 Toyota Avalon sedan -- a first for any vehicle.

Until the Qi standard by the Wireless Power Consortium came along, there was no way to guarantee that all devices were supported. Now there's not only a ubiquitous standard, but also a number of compatible devices.

Among the Qi compatible smartphones are:

Google Inc. (GOOG) Nexus 4

For owners of Qi device, you can now toss away those car chargers. Just place the device on or near the eBin lid in the center console and charging will begin.

Randy Stephens, chief engineer of Toyota Avalon brags, "Pioneering the ability to charge with no wires or connectors by simply putting devices in the car console is an intuitive innovation which reflects Toyota’s continuing commitment to improve the consumer experience. We see wireless charging as an important feature that helps enhance the high-technology theme and consumer interface offered by Avalon Limited which is already equipped with three TFT color screens and Intellitouch™ controls."

The new system is co-designed by ConvenientPower and Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.'s (AMS:PHIA) Lite-on Digital Solutions (PLDS) team. It is an optional feature available with the Technology Package. The technology also comes with Toyota's in-dash infotainment system, and is available for both the gasoline and 40 mpg (combined) EPA-certified hybrid variant.

I don't know if that's the same one in the picture or not, I just did a quick search for "iPhone Qi Wireless" ;)

With the cost of iPhone cases I shudder to think of what a good looking Qi case would run from my provider. Not that I would order a case from my provider.
