Wireless charging standard seems right at home in the vehicle setting
Some ideas make so much sense that it's amazing it took so long for someone to think of them. Such is the case with Toyota Motor Corp.'s (
of the Qi
wireless charging system
2013 Toyota Avalon sedan
-- a first for any vehicle.
Until the Qi standard by the Wireless Power Consortium came along, there was no way to guarantee that all devices were supported. Now there's not only a ubiquitous standard, but also a number of compatible devices.
Among the Qi compatible smartphones are:
HTC Corp. (
Nokia Oyj. (
LG Electronics (
Google Inc. (
For owners of Qi device, you can now toss away those car chargers. Just place the device on or near the eBin lid in the center console and charging will begin.

Randy Stephens, chief engineer of Toyota Avalon brags, "Pioneering the ability to charge with no wires or connectors by simply putting devices in the car console is an intuitive innovation which reflects Toyota’s continuing commitment to improve the consumer experience. We see wireless charging as an important feature that helps enhance the high-technology theme and consumer interface offered by Avalon Limited which is already equipped with three TFT color screens and Intellitouch™ controls."
The new system is co-designed by ConvenientPower and Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.'s (
) Lite-on Digital Solutions (PLDS) team. It is an optional feature available with the Technology Package. The technology also comes with Toyota's in-dash infotainment system, and is available for both the gasoline and 40 mpg (combined) EPA-certified hybrid variant.

If you've paid any attention, that is what has been brought up in distracted driving articles.
The simple act of looking at your clock or changing the radio station, why you HAVE to look to change stations I don't get, is causing distractions.
The mere act of incompentent drivers hasn't been brought up. But we all know there are some how just can't handle driving yet they are out there, causing accidents.

There will always be distracted drivers for millions of different reasons and there will never be a time where every driver sits at the wheel and never takes their eyes off the road it's just not going to happen.
Some of us want to see what radio station we are on and i'm one of those people. How about changing the A/C/Heater settings or moving vents around, checking what time it is, even looking down to see if we are in D or L1. How many cars are driven around the world every day and these are some of th common tasks people perform dozens of times on a drive without issue and looking down at a phone for a second isn't going to all of a sudden increase the number of accidents. We aren't talking about actually using the phone or other dumb tasks like eating or putting on makeup we are talking about a glance to see if it's charging. Not a big deal and anyone getting into an accident over it probably would have done so while looking at any of the above. You can't forcefully fix stupid unless its self-driving vehicles.
