Wireless charging standard seems right at home in the vehicle setting

Some ideas make so much sense that it's amazing it took so long for someone to think of them.  Such is the case with Toyota Motor Corp.'s (TYO:7203installation of the Qi wireless charging system in its 2013 Toyota Avalon sedan -- a first for any vehicle.

Until the Qi standard by the Wireless Power Consortium came along, there was no way to guarantee that all devices were supported.  Now there's not only a ubiquitous standard, but also a number of compatible devices.

Among the Qi compatible smartphones are:

HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) Nokia Oyj. (HEX:NOK1V) LG Electronics (KSC:066570) For owners of Qi device, you can now toss away those car chargers.  Just place the device on or near the eBin lid in the center console and charging will begin.

Randy Stephens, chief engineer of Toyota Avalon brags, "Pioneering the ability to charge with no wires or connectors by simply putting devices in the car console is an intuitive innovation which reflects Toyota’s continuing commitment to improve the consumer experience.  We see wireless charging as an important feature that helps enhance the high-technology theme and consumer interface offered by Avalon Limited which is already equipped with three TFT color screens and Intellitouch™ controls."

The new system is co-designed by ConvenientPower and Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.'s (AMS:PHIA) Lite-on Digital Solutions (PLDS) team.  It is an optional feature available with the Technology Package.  The technology also comes with Toyota's in-dash infotainment system, and is available for both the gasoline and 40 mpg (combined) EPA-certified hybrid variant.

A changing pad/mount that you can see while using the Phone's GPS to Navigate - with that sticky rubber material so your phone doesn't slide off.

It would be great if there were a wireless charging standard created so all phones would be compatible ( except of course for Apple, which would have their own separate standard... You gotta be realistic LOL)

while I like the idea of wireless charging, I like to have my phone up on the dash like you would a regular GPS when I'm using it as a GPS.

Don't worry about that, soon enough that will be illegal anyway.

That is the main issue here, visibility.

The deal breaker for me is that all these devices, basically, remove the charge cradle from your desk/dash, and require you to carry it attached to the phone at all times. You're carrying around a charging device which does nothing to prolong battery life or reduce weight or increase durability when not inducting.

If someone else wants to pay for this fluff, go right ahead. I'll save my money and wait for version 3.0 which should be no bigger than a standard battery pack today.

The phones listed above have the Qi tech built in, so they don't need the charging cradle like other phones would.

That's the purpose of the Qi wireless charging standard mentioned in the article...
