Samsung shows off a new phablet

Samsung has pulled the wraps off a new smartphone in its Galaxy family called the Galaxy Grand. The smartphone runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and has a large five-inch display. This is another phone from Samsung that skirts the gap between the traditional smartphone and a tablet.

The Grand also has a 1.2 GHz dual core processor, integrated GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, integrated Wi-Fi, 8 GB of user accessible memory, and a microSD card slot supporting up to 64 GB cards for expansion. The phone has an integrated accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor, and Gyro. The phone operates on common HSPA+/EDGE/GPRS networks.

 

The phone is loaded with the latest version of Samsung Hubs, which delivers popular games movies and music on demand. The phone will be offered in two versions including a dual-SIM version that launches first, followed by a single-SIM version later. The dual-SIM version of the smartphone allows users to manage two phone numbers with a single phone.

Pricing and availability are unknown at this time.

With 4.7 to 5 inch screens becoming the standard, can we really call this a phablet? This is just a low end phone, to provide alternatives to the many other 5 inch high end phones out and coming out from many makers.

THen buy a smaller phone. It's not like there arent any, its just that the majority of high end phones, and even some lower end ones are going 5 inches. Why? That is what most people want.

I get it. Todays smartphones, regardless of what platform you prefer, all do so much and have such great functionality, to waste it on a small screen is just... A waste. the bigger the better. The rumors out there are that the Note3 will have a 6.3 inch 1080p screen. Gasp!

Until crApple releases a 5" phone and you'll be singing praises that 5" is perfect.....just like all the other iDiots did when iPhone copied Android and went to a 4" 16x9 orientation.....

Like I said, then don't buy one, just don't be surprised when others do.

Wanting a larger screen doesn't make you a moron. It means you realize that with all the great things todays smartphones can do (this means IOS, ANdroid and WP8, and soon to be BB OS10) the small screen is a serious limiting factor in usability. They all do great things, but pinching all that greatness into a tiny screen just limits the usability, and takes away fromt eh enjoyment. I buy may smartphone for what it does when I am using it, not what it gives me when I am not using it (smaller in my pocket).

it may seem dumb in concept to hole a tablet to your face, I thought the GS3 was huge coming from iPhone4. then i got a gs3 and fell in love with the bigger screen (not so much the battery life).

now i wish i had gotten the note 2 after playing with it at best buy last night.

Exactly. The cure for a tiny screen phone is to actually use a larger one. It will cure you quick and you will never go back. Its not just a little better, its miles above.

At what point would you stop, though? 5"? 6"? 7"?

I know it’s a first world problem, but I actually got a tablet in addition to a smartphone exactly for the reason of a bigger screen being nicer to use when actually browsing the web or reading or watching movies. The smartphone fits in my pocket and works well enough for quickly looking stuff up on the go, but I actually prefer having a tablet in my bag and a phone that fits my pockets over trying to have an all-in-one device that’s not really that much bigger, but still big enough to be on the impractical side as a phone.

But if it works for other people, more power to them. I’m definitely happier to see someone enjoying their half-tablet than I am grumpy or judgmental. Thank RandomDeity someone out there is making a device that works for them!

As big as would fit in my pocket and not be a problem. My friends Note2 fits fine, so at least that big would be fine. The benefits far outweigh the problems the large size causes, to me anyhow.

7" is too big. I think with effectively no bezel on the sides, 6" is about the max for a phone. I can actually fit a Nexus 7 in my pocket, but I wouldn't want to carry it around on a regular basis as a phone.

I'm currently at 4.6" and could definitly see how 5" would be better. I don't know I will just have to handle each upsized phone and see at what size it becomes to hard to palm and pocket. One thing they could do is shrink the parts of the phone that are larger than the display.

Not for me, personally. On Sunday I returned the HTC One X+ (that I had been very eagerly awaiting for a couple of months), and bought an iPhone 5. Too-short battery life was the main issue, and the other dealbreaker was the size--the HTC was just too big for me to use with one hand, especially as Android apps often put important UI in the four corners of the screen. I thought the one-hand thing was just a weird fetish of the Apple designers but I found myself constantly annoyed by being not... quite... able to hit the Back button without putting down my 2-year-old, or awkwardly shifting a grocery basket, or letting go of the steering wheel (just kidding).

If there was an Android phone with flagship specs and Jelly Bean but a 4"-or-smaller screen I would have been all over that. An HTC One V with a fast processor and Jelly Bean would have been perfect for me. Sadly the OEMs seem to be reserving the latest components for the big-screened phones.

That's really the trend I'm concerned about--not that these big phones are available, but that they have displaced high-performance high-quality smaller phones (except iPhone).

Sadly this is what these fools on here don't get.

It isn't that we don't understand large phones, it's that we don't think they should be the sole focus of their real performance/quality/etc driven efforts. Right now, a smaller phones, usually means less in every category. But it just goes to show that it's these people that these manufacturers are targeting, so it makes sense.

Sorry, because my hand isn't too small to operate a 5 inch phone with one hand makes me a fool? I mean, I get it people want a smaller phone, and if that is what works best for you then by all means, go for it. I was just saying why the majority of people want a bigger screen and why it has become the norm.

It would be nice if somebody made a dialer app that wasn't full screen and sat centered at the bottom of the screen. Make the dialer say the same size it would be on a 4" screen.

The thing is, for many people, the smart phone is not primarily used for voice anymore. Plus: Bluetooth headsets. Anyway, if someone judges me for holding a 5" phone up to my ear, I'd consider that to be their problem, not mine.

Besides, after playing with the HTC Droid DNA the phone's really not all that big for something with a 5" screen. The Samsung Note II is pretty large and the screen size makes up for it, though personally I wouldn't get one. 5"+ screens work when the bezel is almost non-existent.

I usually find that it's hipsters with skinny jeans and girls that complain about large phones unless it's an Apple product.

5" is just about the right size for a phone screen, if it has a bezel as thin as that.

Just because you have really small hands doesn't mean everyone else does.

I thought having phone with a 5 inch screen was rather absurd as well until my roommate got a Galaxy Note. It's really not cumbersome at all and it honestly doesn't look all that weird when holding it to your ear.
