Wi-LAN file suit for Bluetooth technology
It seems as though everyone is picking on RIM these days. Last month we talked about RIM
losing a patent infringement case to Nokia
relating to Wi-Fi technology.
Today we learned that RIM is involved in a new patent suit that has been filed by Wi-LAN in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The company is suing RIM for infringing on U.S. patent number 6,260,168, which relates to Bluetooth technology.
Wi-LAN alleges that the
and an assortment of other BlackBerry smartphones infringe on the patent. The smartphones named in the suit include the BlackBerry Bold, Torch, Pearl, and Storm.
RIM has offered no official comment on the suit.
Wi-LAN is seeking an unspecified amount of damages and preliminary as well as permanent injunctions to block RIM from infringing on its technology in the future. The company currently licenses its patents to more than 255 companies around the world.
While RIM has
seen its fortunes rise somewhat in the past few months
, the company is mostly betting the farm on the success of BB10. That mobile operating system will
debut in late January
