Peter Misek from Jefferies is already predicting the next iPhone's specs

Sad to say it, Apple fans, but your iPhone 5 is already old news: the iPhone 5S is coming in about six months, and lets just say it has a pretty colorful personality.

According to Peter Misek, an analyst from American global investment bank and institutional securities firm Jefferies, said that the iPhone 5S will be released in June 2013, and will likely come in six to eight different colors.

Misek said the new iPhone 5S will be colorful like the iPod touch, pictured above.

Misek also predicts that the 5S will have an IGZO screen for Retina+, a super HD camera/screen, NFC capability, 128GB of storage and a longer battery life.

Business Insider was quick to note that Misek's predictions have been off with Apple TV, but that he predicted the iPhone 4S last year while everyone else was expecting the iPhone 5. Hence, it seems to think Misek is spot on in the iPhone department.

Just last week, ETrade Supply claimed it had the first leaked photos of the iPhone 5S. More specifically, they looked to be the rear shell, and it shows a few minor differences between the 5 and the future 5S such as the placement of the logic board screw holes.

The iPhone 5 was released in September of this year. It features the new iOS 6 operating system, a larger 4-inch screen, 1136x640 screen resolution, 4G LTE connectivity, 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options, an A6 dual-core processor and an 8MP rear-facing camera/1.2MP front-facing camera. The price is $200/$300/$400 for 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options respectively.

During launch weekend in September, Apple sold a total of 5 million iPhone 5s.

Forget about the 5S at this point, let's just start shooting into the dark re: iPhone 6 specs.

Examples include:
- Patented rectangles with rounded corners!
- "Industry-leading" Retina 2.0 (2272 x 1280) display!
- Lightning 2.0 (incompatible with Lightning 1.0, so you must buy and add more e-waste to your already growing junkyard collection!
- Exclusive Gorilla Glass 3!
- No NFC - who the hell needs it anyway!

Don't forget about the new size that is slightly bigger but somehow is the best idea since sliced bread.

Wasn't the iPhone engineered and well researched such that the phone size chosen was the sweet spot in terms of width and size in general? And isn't this one of the things Apple and its fanbase are proud of? How do you justify the 4.8" screen then? Assuming of course it turns out that way.

Then why are you here?

You read the article and blasted it in a couple separate posts. The particular one I replied to you blasted DT for saying "Sad to say it, Apple fans, but your iPhone 5 is already old news" referring to the upcoming new phone.

Come on, that is nothing. Its a standard thing that people say all the time about the never ending cycle of new tech and you get all butt hurt about it because it involves your precious Apple. It's a nothing comment and you are acting like an angry fanboy.

I never heard that said over the s2 to s3 to the now soon to be s4, or HTC phones in the last 6 months, (apparently it was 1 year from nexus 3 to 4 so ill leave it out this time lol).
Retro, the problem isn't the release cycle periods of any of these phones they could be released every month and that would be great! It's also ok what you, me, and others here think in replies... But I don't think it's ok to constantly read negative, biased, and opinionated articles by the staff. I would feel the same if an article started off negatively about the galaxy s4 launch date but that's not likely to happen on DT.

"I never heard that said over the s2 to s3 to the now soon to be s4,"

People say that all the time about tech and cars and anything that gets released on regular cylces. Its sort of a common goto comment about ever evolving tech.

"But I don't think it's ok to constantly read negative, biased, and opinionated articles by the staff."

Sorry again, the article isnt at all negative or biased. YOU got all bent because its about Apple. You are bing rediculous. Reread the article again and tell me how its negative and/or biased. There is nothingn negative at all, not even slightly. Not even anything that any rational person could possibly misinterpret as negative.

RE: i6.
By BillyBatson on 12/11/2012 1:27:52 PM , Rating: 2
The very first sentence in the article sounds quite negative and seems to be DT staffs collective opinion on apple/iPhone products. Again I haven't seen the same comments towards other platforms. It wasnt a 1 off comment it's practically every cell phone article to do with or mentioning apple.

I'm not being ridiculous and sorry but no matter how many times you or someone else says it I'm not an apple fanboy ;) maybe it makes you feel better to think that I am? Maybe it helps you rationalize my responses, but you'd still be wrong. Funny thing is with most things against apple I'm right along side with a lot of the posters here. But I own an iPhone so I must be a fanboy right?
I actually complain about the writing here on DT by staff across different topics not just the iPhone bashing ones which just happen to be the most opinionated.

That is like saying Sorry 2012 BMW 3 serious owners, the 2013 model is out in 6 months and it will be even better. OK, that is a compliment to BMW about the new product and also a totally expected result. If Apple and BMW didnt release a better product it would be a newsworthy bad thing.

Ironically, Apple makes a huge deal about the next iPhone and it rarely is anything interesting. Google, on the other hand, never makes any deal out of new Android OSes or Nexii and they are always fresh & new and very interesting.

iOS? Seen that/done that for the last 6 years - ho-humm.

Android? New and interesting nearly every year.

RE: DT has the worst cell phone articles
By theapparition on 12/11/2012 12:14:23 PM , Rating: 2
Nexus to Nexus was a full year. Nice fail try though.

And to Apple's credit, the comment was levied because there is a larger percentage of Apple customers who chose to upgrade at full price to the new iThing. While some Galaxy SIII owners will upgrade to the IV, most will hold off until they can get the Galaxy V on contract.

RE: DT has the worst cell phone articles
By BillyBatson on 12/11/2012 12:53:10 PM , Rating: 1
So you disproved 1 of my 3 examples? Nice fail try though.

That part I do agree with you and will admit have done myself but not all do it for the reasons you think. iPhones tend to keep a higher resale value which many use to pay for their next upgrade or right out buy the phone. Also we all know apple product users have been known to spend more on things like hotel rooms now whether this means apple owners are willing to spend more money or are simply more careless with their money so why not spend on a new phone.
Point is though that if this was an article about a new android phone it wouldn't have the same "awww sucks" attitude as this article when it shouldn't have a "booo" feeling at all it should just be straight forward news... But then there would be less hits wouldn't there.

RE: DT has the worst cell phone articles
By MartyLK on 12/11/2012 1:00:17 PM , Rating: 2
I can confirm this - for myself, anyway. I traded in my 2-year-old iPhone 4 for more than enough money to fund a pre-ordered Galaxy S3. Though the GS3 is the best phone in the world, somehow I doubt I would receive enough trade-in allowance for the next upgrade in 2 years.

RE: DT has the worst cell phone articles
By BillyBatson on 12/11/2012 1:40:01 PM , Rating: 2
You won't, but that's ok.... Apple products retain an artificial inflated resale price partly due to brand image but also a slower upgrade cycle means means fewer used phones being sold off.
I have only ever paid for 1 iPhone :) lol my 3G!!! The selling of which paid for my 3GS which paid for my 32gb 4 which paid for my 16gb 5. IF I wanted the 5s/6 in June I'm sure the sale of my 5+ a few dollars out of pocket would buy it outright. I've also entertained the thought of selling my 5 and outright buying a lumia 920 with cash in my pocket just to change things up.

Eeeew...that makes me cringe. That would be a terrible waste of trade-in allowance/upgrade.

I know it seems like WP is a good system. But regret is a bigger part of the system. It is so much less useful than Android - especially a Galaxy S3.

By BillyBatson on 12/11/2012 8:36:16 PM , Rating: 1
I already used my upgrade on the iphone5, I would be selling it at right below retail which is still more money than the 920 costs outright. No loss at all actually.
And I don't see me regretting the move I don't have the gripes with wp8 that some of you do and I'm someone who never downloads apps no matter what Eco system I'm on so app stores don't play a role for me. If I didn't like it I would just sell it add a few bucks and go back to an iPhone.

Apple do two sizes rather than one. As long as the thermals fit between them, there's no need to change PCBs (or even underclock), and they would better be able to cater to different markets. I'm personally a fan of the smaller 3.5" size, and while the 4" iPhone 5 isn't too offensive, it's also not big enough to cater to the 'OMGINEEDAHUGEPHONE' crowd. I think Apple would have done well to release iPhone 5 in a 3.5" form factor and a 5XL around 4.5" - they could then cater to linebackers and women with huge purses, while at the same time, cater to people who want something unobtrusive which can be used with one hand.

Though I think the biggest announcement that they could make when they introduce the next model would be "iPhone 5s! now with working maps!"

As for moving to shorter production cycles, that would seem to make sense, even from a naming perspective. The new generation comes out near the beginning of the year, allowing production volume to ramp up and QC to work out the major bugs, with a speed bump (and color change etc for the superficial) to carry them into the holiday season. Apple (and much of the PC sector) seem to have gotten lazy with once-yearly major refreshes recently (probably due to Intel's once-yearly update cycle), but the ARM cycle is seemingly faster for now.

Really? linebackers and women with huge purses?
Have you even look at a phone like the S3 with a 4.8" screen?
The S3 easy fits in my pocket, even when I'm wearing jeans.
It actually fits better than my old Blackberry, since it's alot thinner.

I even have my sleek GS3 in an Otterbox Defender case and it still is highly portable. But at its size, it makes an outstanding navigation device. The best, actually.

I have a Nexus S with 4" form factor, and although outstanding, it's too small for comfortable usage. Initially it seemed the perfect size. But having a GS3, I *will* grab my GS3 for common usage, and especially for navigating, more than my Nexus.

RE: I'd love to see
By aliasfox on 12/11/2012 11:39:14 AM , Rating: 3
Obviously those are extremes, but it took a while for me to get used to even an iPhone4 (was a gift) moving from a Sony Ericsson dumbphone - and by NYC standards, I don't wear skinny jeans or slim fitting slacks. And I'd much rather have easy one handed use rather than having to stretch (or use two hands).

In fact, my gf has a Galaxy Nexus. She doesn't particularly like the iPhone, but wishes her GN was closer in size to my phone as she keeps her phone in her pocket rather than her purse.

And just from a physical engineering perspective, all else being equal, a larger screen (with a larger piece of unsupported glass) will be more prone to breakage than a smaller screen with a smaller piece of unsupported glass.

Oh Boy, Another Stunning Analyst Prediction
By Kyuu on 12/10/2012 10:09:07 PM , Rating: 4
Why do these analysts' predictions garner attention? Look at any of their records, and they're generally not doing much better than you'd expect from blind conjecture... which shouldn't be surprising, considering that's pretty much what they're doing.

Let's see... "IGZO screen for Retina+"? Maybe, a pretty safe guess considering that's the only real advance to the screen they could do, besides upping the resolution. I'm guessing they're going to save upping the pixel density to rival the HTC Butterfly/Droid DNA is being saved for the iPhone 6 though.

"... a super HD camera/screen" What does this even mean?

"NFC capability" Another safe bet, and they will, of course, market it as the next "magical" thing iPhones can do, despite them being well behind both other platforms on implementing it.

"128GB of storage" Not likely. Including that much NAND would cut into their giant profit margins, especially the $100/200 markup on higher NAND capacity versions. They *may* move up to 32GB as the base $199 model.

"... and a longer battery life." Oh wow, now that's a stunning prediction.

By MadMan007 on 12/11/2012 6:35:00 AM , Rating: 2
The flash capacity is the most likely of those specs. By next summer the newest flash node that just recently ramped up will be well-established, it won't cost Apple any more to include twice the flash.

Apple needs 2 (at least) models
By MartyLK on 12/11/2012 10:16:34 AM , Rating: 2
Apple should consider at least two models of the iPhone to maximize relevancy.

One traditional model with the 4" display and 6-year-old OS for the huge portion of users who don't like change. And one modernized or advanced model with a 4.7" to 5.0" display with a fresh and new OS - completely different from the original OS - for the huge number of Android users who require "fresh & new" all the time (myself among them).

The new OS needs to *not* be icon-based, but rather widget-based (Android is open-source and unpatented) or something new and different of Apple's own creativity.

Idiotic loser quote of the year from someone completely out of touch.

FWIW,
Apple has long been on a semi-annual product release. Generally, they didn't release their iPod/iPhone/iPad/iMac products at the same time. They've been doing this for years. So Tony, why you've managed to actually lend credence to this view is quite baffling.

I actually take the opposite view. Apple's helter-skelter release schedule as of late is actually showing some incompetence and lack of product direction.

Previously, iPhones were all released in June corresponding to Apple WWDC. iPads were unveiled in Jan. But the delays on the 4S showed that they didn't have mastery of product release. This has caused confusion in most of their releases instead of their yearly product refreshes.

I think their only plan is to get new product out as quickly as possible, as they know a large percentage of their customers will buy it. If that means two or three releases a year on their iPhone, than so be it.

IMO I don't see any advantage when Apple releases two iphone products in one year. Just look at the difference between the ipad3 and ipad4. I think their goal is to return to June's release schedule corresponding to WWDC.
