Apple Maps is a little confused about where Mildura is

Australian police are warning citizens and tourists not to use Apple Maps in iOS 6 when traveling through the dangerous terrain of Mildura.

Police from the city of Mildura, which is a regional city in northwestern Victoria, Australia, are concerned that Apple's new homemade mapping service in iOS 6 is taking people to inaccurate (and dangerous) areas -- where they've become stranded.

The problem is that Apple Maps places Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, but in reality, Mildura is about 43 miles (or 70 km) from that location.

Not only is this a lengthy inconvenience, it's also a danger to the lives of motorists who were duped by Apple Maps. The area in Murray Sunset National Park, which it claims is Mildura, is a very hot and dry area that can reach temperatures of nearly 115 degrees Fahrenheit (or 46 degrees Celsius).

Mildura Police have already found stranded motorists who were lost out in the Murray Sunset National Park without food and water for as long as 24 hours.

Mildura Police have contacted Apple to fix the issue.

Earlier this year, Apple ditched Google Maps as its main iOS maps app in favor of its own in-house maps service. Apple Maps debuted with the iOS 6 launch, but the application failed miserably when it came to navigation and geography. It displayed locations that didn't exist, represented existing locations in an unrecognizable way or gave false directions.

This forced Apple CEO Tim Cook to have to apologize to customers for the company’s poor job on the new app.
Shortly after, Apple Vice President of iOS Software Scott Forstall was booted from the company. He oversaw much of the mapping development, and aside from that, failed to get along with other company executives and employees.

Richard Williamson, manager of the Apple mapping team, was fired as well for the horrible job on Apple's new maps service.

Tony, you're reaching. 4 different coloured boxes arranged in a 2x2 stack is obviously a unique trademark. A black oval titled to one side definitely is not. Whoever is charging Apple for those applications is however a genius for getting their money.

Oh noes...

Google has an average of 5 minutes of downtime per MONTH. I'd love to see some statistics of iCloud...

Oh wait, it can't even utilize push services in some major countries. Nice try once again and I'll add yet another participation medal to your trophy shelf.

Tony, your pathetic attempt at diversion shows us all that it is indeed an issue. If it were a "non-issue" like you Apple nutjobs try to tell us, you wouldn't bother trying to divert attention from it.

Thanks for the confirmation though. Now we know.

Android keeps getting better and better while IOS stagnates and in some cases gets worse. LOL.

Spoken like a true champion of the Linux cause. The Super Stupenderific Linux Revolution is coming!! Viva Linus Torvalds!!

Wait, where have I heard that before? Oh yea, in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, in 1999 it skipped a year for some reason, then in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, etcetera... etcetera... etcetera....

Huh? Are you drunk? At least make an effort to follow the conversation. My post was in reply to a comment about Google's Gmail services going down.

All of Google runs on Linux. Gmail, Maps, everything at Google runs on 10's of thousands of Linux servers.

But to respond to your inane comment, Linux is already #1 in market share for internet web servers, embedded devices, networking equipment (nearly all new Cisco routers and switches run a Linux kernel), supercomputers (8 of the top 10 supercomputers in the world run linux), mobile devices (the 10's of millions of Android phones out there). Linux already is #1 in nearly every computing segment! The only segment Linux isn't #1 in, is the very bottom of the pile, the lowest common denominator, the desktop.

Compare that to Microsoft's ever hopeful cycle of try-fail-try-fail when it comes to any of the aforementioned markets.

Apple user: imPhony says this is the pediatrics clinic in downtown Mildura...but I don't see it.

Dingo: [Peeks out from behind scrub brush in the middle of the desert]

Apple user: Oh! Hello! Are you the receptionist? Yes, we have an appointment for our baby to be looked at.

Dingo: [looks around a bit to try to spot Ashton Kutcher and a Punk'd camera...doesn't see one]

Apple user: Hello?! We have an appointment for our baby!

Dingo: Oh, right mate, sorry didn't see you there...ummm...have a seat.

Apple user: [consults imPhony, which says there should be a chair *right there* - goes to sit in it and falls on the ground] Thanks!

Dingo: So, uh, baby you said?

Apple user: Yes, we have an appointment to have our baby looked at.

Dingo: [pretends to consult an appointment book] Oh, yes, right here you are...right on time! will see your baby right away.

Apple user: Oh, that's great - here he is! [hands over baby]

Dingo: Great, thanks, you just wait right here...[scampers off with baby]

Dingo's are actually a rather shy animal and the amount of Dingo related attacks compared to say... Sharks, Snakes and Crocodiles is fairly small. - Not to mention all the other poisonous Amphibians, reptiles and insects!

More importantly the attacks mostly happen on Fraser island where people get up close and feed the animals.

Plus, in some states people keep them as pets and they can be every bit as good as a normal domesticated dog.

If you ever come to Australia, the last thing you should be worried about is the Dingo. :)

As for the iPhones mapping bugger-ups. Nothing can replace common sense, there are plenty of signs around the highways connecting to Mildura to let you know which way to go.

The only maps I have been using lately are the ones in Planetside 2. They are easy to read, functional and show me where the action is for a surprise pod drop or 274 tank/Sunderer Zerg rush.

That said, Apple should hire away these fine programmers from SOE. They can't fix lag for crap or make it possible to see enemies within 20 feet in front of you without clipping in and out, but they sure as heck make pretty maps.

Umm... the town is 43 MILES AWAY FROM WHERE IT SAYS IT IS!!! This is not a minor GPS inaccuracy this is an outright programming error on Apple's part. A street that's a highway? Fine. An alley that's a canal? OK. A town that is a desert? Not acceptable.

GPS is only accurate if the GPS device, in this case an iPhone, has an accurate clock that is sync with out a varied in time. In the past iPhones have an issue with its clock, so GPS on an iPhone will be not accurate. Do a test with your iPhone by putting it in Airplane or Flight mode for a week to find out if it can keep clock sync. If it lags or adds a few seconds, it is not a good device for GPS.

I prefer to look at a map before driving or going to a new place that I am not familiar. If you just wing it, of course you will get lost in some goonies land.

Hey, idiot, welcome to the village.

I agree with Argon18. GPS are always not accurate. It gives the ideal location. It can be 100 miles from where you should be or where you are at. Everybody is best off looking at a map before driving and figuring other routes if the primary routes are blocked or missed. Also it is best to have a person in the passager seat following where you are driving. Nothing beats the old ways of navigation.

BTW, down grading someones post that is true and common sense really shows how immature you are. I up the vote because is should be read.
