Apple is expected to rebound with the iPhone 5 launch

Apple's position in the Chinese smartphone market was bumped from No. 4 to No. 6 in the third quarter as China-based brands fire up the competition.

Apple, which previously held the No. 4 spot in the Chinese mobile phone market, slipped to No. 6 in Q3 due to its low number of shipments, according to research firm IDC. Out of China's 60 million mobile phone shipments in Q3, Apple's iPhone accounted for less than 10 percent.

China is the world's largest cell phone market with over one billion mobile subscribers at present. Chinese electronics brands have been pushing sales harder with better prices and enhanced features.

Another issue is that less than one-fifth of the one billion subscribers still use the 3G network, according to Reuters. Apple's iPhone 4S and previous do not have 4G compatibility, so other options in the market likely looked a lot more attractive.

However, IDC expects Apple's position to jump back up after the release of the iPhone 5 in December. The iPhone 5 was released in the U.S. back in September, but Chinese residents had to wait on regulatory approval to have the device sold in the country. Now that Apple has that approval, the iPhone 5 will make its way to the mobile market in China this month.

The iPhone 5 finally has 4G compatibility and a larger screen at nearly 4 inches. These and other new features should make the newest addition to the iPhone family a competitive threat in the Chinese mobile market.

The ranking of electronics manufacturers in China's mobile market is as follows, from first to sixth place: Samsung, Lenovo, Coolpad, ZTE Corp., Huawei Technologies Co. and Apple.

I have used the iPhone 5 and am not impressed. The larger screen looks like they just made it longer and didn't widen it at all. It's more of the same ol same ol and when compared to the latest offerings from Samsung I don't think the iPhone 5 will gain to much traction in China.

I agree.

Personally, I'm impressed by the weight and how thin the iPhone 5 is, but other than that, I think it's damn ugly. It just looks too long. It needs some additional width.

{pats my Note 2 reassuringly}

Don't worry, Note 2, you're not disgusting at all. Nortel is just a stupid, prejudiced Apple troll so blinded by his brand loyalty that he can't recognize genuine innovation when he sees it. He'll still be using a tiny phone with a tiny screen that his tiny hands can manipulate while the rest of the world moves on (and you know what they say about men with small hands...).

I have no problem using my S3 with one hand, so what does that mean :)

I second the one handed S3 usage: it's not an issue for me (and I have average to small hands). My observation over the past couple months: I recently got a Razr M (comparable size and res. to the iPhone 5) that I'm generally happy with, but I feel a little jealous every time I use my wife's S3. I'm sold on the bigger screens.

The Note 2... I have limited experience with it, but what I have seen adds some credence to the old joke about the iPad just being an oversized phone. A big phone works fairly well as a tablet - with the added bonuses of being (almost?) pocketable and not needing two devices.

Even I bought a Note 2. I've certainly enjoyed using the iPhone over the past 3-4 years, but their latest iPhone 5 just doesn't excite me. Decided to give Android a try.

Well bigger smartphone screens is bad...until Apple releases a similar product. then he will have not enough words to praise Apple's "innovation". Hypocrite.

And patent the use of screens larger than 4" cause they innovated and came up with the idea.

Come on man! They "invented" it, not "innovated"... Don't you know? Apple invents everything!

Holding it with one hand I can reach the entire screen with my thumb. The GS3 and the disgusting note II are so large, they cannot be used with one hand comfortably

Hands just a tad too small, eh?

You know, there's a saying about that..

Apple isn't doomed, just like Microsoft or Intel isn't doomed.

Worse case? They use their massive cash reserves and merely downsize, much like Matrox and VIA did and focus on niche' markets.

Here Tony comes to save the day (Mighty Mouse theme) !!! His usual tactics of only providing financial stats which to the average user DOESN'T matter. They aren't gonna stay profitable much longer if your precious stock keeps dropping at terminal velocity. 6% drop on Wednesday and already 2.44% drop as of this second with hours to go. I really enjoy watching their price hit $1,000 like you and so many other "ANALyst" predicted. Oh wait, they are barely hanging on to 1/2 of that and it's only gonna get worse.

How does stock price drive profitability??

Because a very large part of Apple's success is its "cult" status, the belief that they are Godlike and everything they do they do spectacularly well.

Then along comes the stock price crash, and former acolytes are left scratching their heads and wondering why the Golden Child is no longer golden.

I worked for Apple back in the 1980's. I left with their good graces to start my own company. No one needs to educate me about Apple pros and cons.

That's how.

You will have to forgive Tony as he only knows what crApple tells him like the good employee/sheep he is. He can't think outside of the box as it is against the Macolyte religion. I just wish that all companies could have employees 1/2 as dedicated as he is.

Lenovo makes smartphones? Why aren't they selling them here. I love their laptops and would like to see what they could give me on the phone front. They should start off here next year with a Nexus V, that would be awesome.

The whole mobile market ?

The article writes
the Chinese mobile phone market
does it mean every single cell phone sold ?
It's unfair to compare apple to, say , samsung without assuming you talk only where they are both present, the smartphone segment.
