ETrade Supply claims it has the rear shell of the upcoming iPhone 5S

The world was finally graced with the iPhone 5's presence in September of this year after a long wait (remember when we all thought the iPhone 4S was actually going to be the 5 in 2011? Oops). Only three months after the 5's release, rumored photos of the iPhone 5S are already starting to circulate.

ETrade Supply, a parts firm, has released many photos of what it believes to be the shell of the iPhone 5S. More specifically, it looks to be the rear shell, and it shows a few minor differences between the 5 and the future 5S.

One difference includes the placement of the logic board screw holes, which is slightly different from the pattern in the current iPhone 5. ETrade Supply also offered a few other differences, which are highlighted in blue, yellow, purple and red below.

While it's unclear where these photos came from, the rear housing appears to be genuine with the normal regulatory identifiers, IMEI, etc. But one possible theory is that it's an old, discarded iPhone 5 design.

You're not impressed?
Just look at that shape!
Four sides with rounded corners! How could they come up with that?!

Sir, you have won this thread.

Cell phone designs in general bore me. How about a flexible OLED screen you can slap onto your wrist and prop up flat with a push of a button.

Sounds like you want something kind of like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zto6aTZM9t0

Too bad this is nothing more than a concept

and from Nokia

That's the beauty of it though, it is still a concept which means that Apple will make it first and patent it, Android handset makers will make their versions and I'll buy one, and Nokia will be pushed further into obsolescence.

No worries this is obviously a fake as Apple pictures have a purple fringe to them.

Easy, by copy Sony's designs.

I'm not impressed. It looks exactly like Samsung, HTC, Motorola & Nokia.

When Apple comes up with a triangle design, I'll consider buying one.

If they can figure out how to cheaply produce a triangular or round screen, or even a rectangle with rounded corners on a screen, I'll be impressed. That would be actual innovation. (I don't mean making a rectangular screen and blocking off parts of it, I mean a real screen that is a different shape than a rectangle.) The fact of the matter is that a rectangle is the cheapest, and currently only, way to produce a LCD or OLED screen. Any other angles make it impossible to control properly, and it would have to have a graphics controller that could handle the logic of a different shape. Most people don't seem to understand that.

It's doable, but isn't for the reason that it's a stupid idea. Why would you want to purposely reduce screen real-estate, especially when, as your post mentions, you can simulate it by covering up a bunch of the screen and only backlighting the portion you want seen.

Motorola Aura had round screen (retina, BTW, 309ppi). It wasn't cheap though, perhaps because of of mechanical build quality.

ok, I had never seen that before. The engineering behind something like that would be tremendously difficult. That is actually innovative. I am sufficiently impressed.

A triangle screen would be cheap and easy to produce: take a rectangle screen and cut it in half diagonally. There would be little to no waste and could likely be done with existing equipment. IMO, these aren't common simply because no one wants one.

A truly Round screen = throwing away the corners and much more difficult cuts among other things. That would probably be quite a bit more expensive.

Both of these shapes would be inferior for general usability and content consumption, and so are kind of pointless (the round one is especially "pointless" haha!).

You must be talking about the pyramid phone from Sabre. I hear they're coming out with a pyramid tablet too. Don't know if its patented yet though, so Apple still has time to "Inovate".

Best wishes for all in the coming year,

LOL... Yes, and we can all rest assured that the iPhone 5s will indeed have a rear cover since its now been proven. We can also assume by its size that it will have the smallest screen with the lowest resolution of all high end smartphones on the market. I am sure it will be fast though, and get IOS7,8,9 upgrades, although it will probably still look and operate just like IOS3. ;)

Sure I do.

Apple makes a good phone that is very fast and has very limited features compared to the competition. They sell them in high #'s and make great profit. Great for an Apple investor. For consumers, not such a good deal. I think you are well aware of the same thing I am... That Apple hasn't innovated anything since 2007 and the competition has passed them by. Most consumers arent tuned in enough to realize it yet.

Will it still have the great new mapping feature and iTunes? I still want it Apple friendly with not too much change at once.
