Deal will make Qualcomm the largest shareholder in Sharp
TV maker Sharp Corp has been having a very
of late with profitability declining significantly. It was announced today that Qualcomm is set to invest as much is $120 million in Sharp, which would make it the largest shareholder.
One portion of the agreement between the two companies is that Qualcomm's Pixtronix subsidiary will work with Sharp to develop new power efficient displays based on Sharp's IGZO technology.
"With this agreement Sharp will accelerate its strategy for growth in small to medium-sized LCDs," the Japanese company said.
reports that Qualcomm's initial investment will add up to about $59.91 million and will be made by the end of the year. The remainder of the investment is reportedly conditional on Sharp's ability to turn a profit in the second half of its fiscal year ending on March 31, 2013.
Sharp had previously been courting an investment from Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Limited, which would have made Hon Hai its biggest shareholder. However, talks between Sharp and Hon Hai fell apart as losses mounted for Sharp.

Sharp Makes Great TV's...

It's strange how Sharp is near bankruptcy. They make some of the best large screens out there. Sharp makes huge 90" LED screens for less than $9K, if that's what you're looking for.
(I don't know why, but when you click on the above link in DailyTech, you get Amazon's $10K listing. But if you copy the above link and paste it in IE9 or FF, you get a different $8.5K listing.)

Anandtech uses detonator.dynamitedata.com for redirects (and a little payoff I guess). I just copy/paste the links if possible.

That's unfortunately the problem. When a electronics giant make high quality products, they can't really be competitive in the free market where average quality @ average prices will always be more successful.
The Sharp TV I own is about 7 years old (surprisingly made in Mexico in a factory next door to the Hermosillo plant that built my old Focus) and it's quality is exceptional. Maybe even "overbuilt" would be a accurate description.
