Grand Theft Auto V
GTA IV reportedly accounts for 25 million of the total games shipped

The Grand Theft Auto franchise has been very popular over the years and has also spawned some serious hate for the video game industry as a whole. Some have alleged that video games such as the GTA franchise make players violent.

Despite any bad publicity that the GTA franchise may have garnered, the game has hit a significant milestone with 125 million copies shipped to date. The 125 million figure is up 11 million copies from the 114 million units Take-Two announced had shipped by September 2011.

No details on how the 125 million unit number breaks down per title from the franchise were offered by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick.

Zelnick likens the sporadic release schedule for games in the GTA franchise to James Bond films saying that just as with Bond films, the GTA release schedule keeps the franchise "special."

Zelnick said of Activision's COD release schedule, "It's our view that if you want intellectual properties to be permanent, then you run the risk in that circumstance of having consumers fall out of love with that franchise. [Activision] obviously views the world differently."

To prove his point Zelnick pointed out that Black Ops II didn't perform as well as Modern Warfare 3, signaling that the COD franchise is slowing.

"That's never been the case with one of ours," he said. "Ours do better each time. Our view is it's hard to make permanent intellectual properties if you annualize it, with the exception of sports titles. So far, that's proven to be the case. IP that is annualized eventually seems to hit the wall and we don't want our IP to hit the wall."

The next game in the Grand Theft Auto franchise will be GTA V, which is due in Spring 2013. The game’s second official trailer surfaced earlier this month.

Taking a long drive between cities and exploring everything between was one of San Andreas' great features. I want to play it again just thinking about it. GTA IV was a far denser area, true, and graphically superior in all aspects but it was just a gigantic city blur. Some player love the exploration facet and sandboxing offered before GTA IV.

There was a lot more to do in San Andreas. Not just empty space.

“Then they pop up and say ‘Hello, surprise! Give us your money or we will shut you down!' Screw them. Seriously, screw them. You can quote me on that.” -- Newegg Chief Legal Officer Lee Cheng referencing patent trolls
