GM talks next-generation infotainment systems in LA
GM has announced that the
2014 Chevrolet Impala
will get its next generation MyLink infotainment system. The new infotainment system is designed to be easy to use and customize with the ability to link with up to 10 different devices. The next generation MyLink system is also Chevrolet’s first attempt at natural language voice-recognition allowing drivers to control the infotainment system with their voice.
Chevrolet says that its natural language voice-recognition system will let customers place calls, enter destinations, browse media, play music, and control other functions by telling the vehicle what to do. Chevy says that the user won't need to remember any key phrases and won't have to look at the screen.
While rival Ford has been offering similar voice control technology with its
system for years, Chevrolet says that its system can be operated via large and clearly labeled knobs or via steering wheel controls.

Chevrolet's system also allows users to customize the graphic treatment of the instrument cluster and integrated stack with one of four personalities. The system uses a 4.2-inch high-resolution LCD screen or an available eight-inch screen.
While the 2014 Impala will be the first to get the next generation MyLink system, Chevrolet will be integrating Siri technology into some Spark models and the Sonic LTZ and RS cars. The Siri capability will be available through the standard MyLink infotainment system in the vehicles. The system supports Apple's Siri Eyes Free mode allowing user to interact with the iPhone using their voice.
In Eyes Free mode, the screen of the iPhone will stay dark to reduce distraction. The Eyes Free mode will allow Spark and Sonic drivers to make voice activated phone calls, play songs in the iTunes library, compose messages to send via iMessage or text, and switch music sources. Drivers will also be able to access the calendar and add appointments using their voice.
MyLink with Siri Hands Free
“It says a lot about our commitment to small-car customers that Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars. “Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink’s existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience.”
